Katherine Blakeney is an author and filmmaker with a BFA in Stop Motion Animation from the School of Visual Arts in New York and a PhD in Film Studies from the University of Edinburgh (Scotland, UK). Raised by an archaeologist mother, she grew up among museums and excavation sites, where she developed an unhealthy fascination with ancient art and mythology. What a fun ride! I loved every second of the space travel, treasure hunt, archaeology, and learning about the culture on the planet Thror--the writing was so vivid, I could almost SMELL the planet!After receiving a blank note and an old camera, Carter travels to the planet of Thror to solve the mystery surrounding her friend, Conrad's, sudden disappearance. She kidnaps her archaeology class--a group of interesting, very different girls and her professor--forcing them along for the ride. Digging in the Stars was very well-written and the characters were relateable and smart. I learned a lot about archaeology and what it entails. Katherine Blakeney sure knows her stuff! Carter's search for Conrad kept me guessing at every twist and turn. Was he really missing or was he like Margo in Papertowns by John Green--was he just playing her? The ending was satisfying but came way to soon! I can't wait to read more by Katherine Blakeney!

It's a teen drama, girl's own, sci-fi, "King Solomon's Mines", alien world quest adventure. The characters are stock, except when they aren't, and the plot is incoherent, except when it makes sense. It is loaded with loose ends and implausibilities piled on top of coincidences, but it is so ambitious and imaginative, and it is driven by such a helter-skelter narrative, that I stormed through it despite myself.Here's a brief plot synopsis. Moody, damaged heartthrob Conrad heads to the planet Thror and disappears. He sends some clues about his fate to Carter. She books her archeology class field trip to Thror without telling her prof or the other students, and so they get on a spaceship to Magnus and find themselves actually transported to Thror. Really? Since they're all stuck there they all decide to try to find Conrad, because hey, why not. Thror was once home to an advanced, artistic and glamorously exotic civilization that was totally wiped out by massive, cataclysmic volcanic eruptions and earthquakes that basically Pompeiified the entire planet. Or did it? Is there cool hidden stuff out there? Are the few surviving Throrians hiding it? Did Conrad find it? Will we? The only way to find out is to hike out into the baking, ash covered, volcanic wasteland of Thror and have a bit of a look around.This shouldn't work. Our crew is Carter, (a sometimes lion-hearted and sometimes timid heroine), Professor P, (alternately furious at everything and then calmly understanding), and a sarcastic famous girl, a homesick namby-pamby, an earth child nutty granola girl, and a phone dependent gum chewer. The local Throrians are seven-foot-tall furry gorilla/lizards who spend most of their time hitting on attractive Earth woman. (How would that work?) And Conrad is Lord Byron by way of Heathcliff. Stop it; you're killing me here.I think the thing is that when the book gets cooking it's really very good. This book is set in the year 2222, and our Carter wants to be like the Howard Carter who found Tut's tomb in 1922. When she thinks about his discovery, and reads about the way Thror used to be, and imagines what there is that might be found in Thror now, well, the book just takes off. The writing is beautiful and evocative and romantic in a great adventure sort of way. That part is so good, and there's enough of it, that I was willing to skip over the bumpy parts, the stilted dialogue, and the crazy quilt plotting. (In all of that, by the way, the book is identical to "King Solomon's Mines", and that's a classic.)So, for an older Middle Grade or younger YA reader with a taste for romantic high-energy alien world adventure and mystery quests, my bottom line is that this could be a very happy find.(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)

Ok wow. First I just want to say that the writing was fast paced and so smooth, Excellent writing. The story was Intense and mysterious and gripped your attention, I've only read a few books that have involved space travel and different planets and alien species and I love the absolute anything can happen freedom of it! Basically anything seemed possible in this book and that made reading it feel so fun, I Couldn't put it down. I may or may not have read it in two days! There were quite a few creative twists, and you can't help but wonder what happened to her friend Conrad. when you thought you had it figured out, the plot would change. I had no idea how it was going to end...You also can't help but love the main character she's so spunky yet fiercely loyal and with the addition of the other classmates it gave the book a funny banter and lightened it up quite a bit. The ending was intense! I didn't see any of that coming. I would HIGHLY suggest this book to any Fantasy book lovers!

Oh My Goodness. This book.This story follows Carter and her archaeology group to a different planet for an apprenticeship program. That alone drew me in. Archaeology in space? YES PLEASE. Not only does that sound amazing, but it is refreshingly different from so many other YA novels. This book included family, friendship, sci-fi, and mystery all into one. The plot was seriously never lacking in action.I really enjoyed the writing style of it. It included real historical facts about archaeology, and added in fictional discoveries that mirrored some that actually took place in the early 1900s, and I thought that was fantastic. Blakeney's writing made it so easy to just fly through this book. She had mysterious moments, then made them funny with side characters, then right back to fun science fiction. I loved that we got so many answers in the end, and a lot of it, I was not expecting at all.I went in not knowing too much about the plot itself, and I really enjoyed that way. I HIGHLY recommend this book. It was so unique and fun, and really a great read. Please do yourself a favor and pick it up!

The issue with this book is that it fills no real need. If you are a football nerd, there is almost no new material in this book for you. Belichick is a football savant. Belichick is a jerk. Belichick plays fast and loose with the rules. Belichick is a decent person outside of football. Other than a small amount of info regarding the 2017-2018 period, there is little in this book that isn't well known to football fans. And if you aren't a football fan, I'm not sure why you would be reading a biography of someone as one-dimensional as BB.Halberstam's "Education of a Coach" covered most of this material and probably did it better.Bottom line - I didn't finish this book with any appreciable increase in understanding of Belichick or what makes him tick.

I’ve always been a Fan of Ian O’Connors work. I think what makes this book so good is it is very balanced. The author shows both his flaws and strengths. This book includes a lot of information about Belichick that I was unaware of. The “Patriot Way” is to be very stingy with information so I’m guessing the author had some excellent sources and really researched his subject. I was especially taken by the human side of Belichick the author paints such as the $100 hand shakes. While Belichick and his methods have been written about a gazillion times, this book is definitely worth it, I loved it (and I am not a Patriot fan)

I am a pats fan and wanted to like the book. However, seemed like a rehash of old news stories with no value added.

If this your first book you on Bill Belichick I do not believe it goes into has much depth as some of the others. It still is pretty good book should be a fast read. I wish there would have been a little more behind what happen with Jimmy Graoppalo. It does cover more about deflate gate. Lets face it folks most of the fans out there that hate Bill Belechick and the New England Patriots wish their team had as much continued success as the patriots have had and continue to have.Give the book a read

Anyone who wants to know what makes the greatest football coach of all time and perhaps the greatest overall coach of all time tick, then read this book. It is a fascinating look inside of Bill, his upbringing and sacrifices he's made to become the best. As a fan of the Patriots it was even more enjoyable but I was a fan long before he showed up and will be long after he leaves. A very enjoyable, entertaining and insightful read and hats off to Ian O'Connor for his fine work, uncovering a recluse subject.

Enjoyed the book for its compilation of all that we've come to learn about Belichick over the years, his brilliant sports mind, attention to detail, lack of common decency. Too bad the hundreds of interviews the author conducted aren't reflected in much additional insight into the man, the coach, the competitor who's dominated the sport for two decades.

For those of you with daughters looking for books with strong, memorable female characters, Gooney Bird Greene is a must read series. We borrowed this book from the library initially, and enjoyed it so much we bought a copy for my daughter's 3rd grade class, along with 8 dictionaries for the third graders to use. Not only is it an enjoyable story for the first- to third-grade age range, it also motivates them to learn how to use a dictionary. I agree with one of the other reviewers that the story is not quite as strong as the first book, but it is still an enjoyable read.Additionally, it has a surprise ending that got me choked up, and when I checked to see how my daughter's teacher liked it, she had also been surprised and choked up by the ending.Lastly, it wasn't until we picked up some other books by Lois Lowry that we discovered she has won a couple Newbery awards for other books she has written.

I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter to read and she finished all but the last chapter in one sitting! It is sometimes very difficult to find a series that she enjoys enough to read of her own accord, and this one has definitely been her favourite so far.This is her 3rd Gooney Bird book, and she will get her fourth one in her Christmas stocking, which I know she will be thrilled to receive. We first discovered Lois Lowry's funny and engaging books about a quirky and very likeable 2nd grade little girl, unusually named Gooney Bird, when I bought one on a Kindle daily deal, and now I wish the author had written more!When I asked my daughter if she used the Kindle dictionary to look up any words that she didn't know, she told me that she didn't need to, because all of the hard words' definitions were explained to Gooney Bird's class as part of the story! Hopefully the book will have the added benefit of increasing her vocabulary!

Not as great as Gooney Bird Greene, Gooney Bird the Absurd or Gooney Bird the Fabulous. Those others had great wit, lessons on writing stories, fables, and poetry. This one had a weak plot, and some unsavory remarks about stinky socks, unlike in the other books where the children were always supportive of one another.

My Grandson wanted Chapter Books and this is what chose.

gooney bird and the room mother was the best book i have ever read in my whole life. my favorite part was when the room mother said happy thanksgiving. (This was read and written by my seven year old granddaughter who reads on my Kindle often.)

I teach first grade and read Gooney Bird books aloud to my class. We love the books. We all know these are works of fiction and that classrooms in real life don't work like Gooney Bird's. We are drawn to Gooney Bird's big heart and confidence.

What a great book! Lots of real-life stories of how the author and others handled change. Dozens of ideas and techniques to help get through life's challenges and curve balls. How to view changes in a new light even to the point of embracing change, because all change brings growth.

I just got this book and started reading it. I read every other day until I got uncomfortable. Things started changing right away but I was able to go-with-the-flow and not freak out like I usually do. It's an awesome book written by someone who is the same religion as I am, ECKANKAR. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone.

This is a well written book chock full of guidance for coping with expected and unexpected changes in your life. The author really writes from her heart yet offers practical, sound advice with useful exercises. She implores the reader to take the higher soulful view when experiencing big changes which I found helpful and calming. Not a religious book but she does implement this soulful approach to work with changes in life as opposed to resisting changes, esp uninvited ones.I liked the chapters on establishing realistic 'big' goals by paring them down to smaller goals ie., working your way down the ladder as opposed to looking up the ladder which can make them seem elusive. Working your down allows for growth and flexibility, you can change your mind! Have always marvelled at those who were good at goal setting but didn't grasp the actual mechanics behind it. Maybe being too rigid on wanting a specific outcome I would then view as a failure if it didn't happen exactly as intended. She emphasizes letting go of wanting a specific outcome or desire and to remain open to what does transpire as the variation could be a better fit; this is a difficult but worthwhile proposition to master.This is a terrific book. The final chapters explore the possibilities of past lives and although that is too far fetched for me, I'm open to whatever works for a person and would not discount the sound advice dispensed in this book.

Do wish that things could always remain the same? Have you found that they don't? Are you afraid that you lack the strength and ability to cope with on-going change in your life? Ms. Moore offers the concept that changes are gifts from a loving God, and invites us to consider the benefits, the inherent blessings contained in these gifts. She shares her own personal experiences in surviving cancer, and bankruptcy, just to mention a few. She also includes refreshing, insightful exercises to help one surpass the "helpless victim consciousness", and re-gain mastery over any situation. The book is further enhanced by true experiences of many of Ms. Moore's friends. Each recognized their need to change, for personal and spiritual growth. I especially liked the "Daily Problem Solver" passage, and the "Asking God a Question" exercise on pages 117-118. They are among the many tips presented in this remarkable book to help anyone handle life's difficult moments.

Recent changes in my life have made me feel confused and lostabout myself and my life. I am still quite young and in the prime ofmy life for change and personal growth. I really was looking for a book that wasn't "out there" but was more down to earth and could help me deal with my feelings of confusion and help me set a path to my life. I am taking my days one at a time now and looking for the positive in every experience thanks to this book. I am a pretty conservative person and this book has helped me to open my mind and my heart. I highly recommend it to anyone experiencing any confusion about life or anyone who feels they need some guidance. This book is guaranteed to make you feel much more in control of your own destiny and feelings.

We used this book, How to Master Change in Your Life for our writers group and found the results more than satisfying. Each member of our group experienced tremendous growth in both our spiritual focus and personal lives. Alan Knight is Professor Emeritus of the History of Latin America at Oxford University. I enjoyed this book. But I know a lot of Mexican history. I thought the book was an excellent refresher, but someone with no knowledge of the subject will likely be overwhelmed — maybe too strong a word — by the names, the events, and the information. On the plus side, readers of this book may have their interests piqued and look into the subject deeper.

This short volume is well constructed. It's particularly strong in the background and tumultuous early years of the Mexican Revolution.

Excellent. Very clear & well organized. The Mexican Revolution was hugely complex, with great variances of time and region. Sutherland does an outstanding job of giving us curious non-specialists a way of understanding it all. A fine book!

A very good concise chronicle of the events from1910 to the 60's puts in perspective the complexity of the Revolution and its aftermath.

Like so many good, intelligent books on Mexico, this one struggles to find an audience. I just don't think it would be very much help to someone trying to understand what happened in Mexico between 1910 and 1930. A beginner would like some sort of chronology, of which there is none. A map of Mexico would be helpful, and there is one of little use. There are sophisticated and trenchant observations on the historiography of the Revolution that would amuse an experienced historian, and, for someone who has a general idea of the cast of characters and events, a very helpful and all too brief attempt to look at the big picture in a sort of "and so?" discussion. But mostly, this is a book for cognoscenti, and it would not be a wise idea to toss it at a group of undergrads and expect them to make something of it. Professor Knight knows too much, which is both impressive and unhelpful.

I am currently watching a documentary on the Galápagos Islands and bought this little guide to see what it is like.At the back is a stylised map with the different islands and where you are likely to see what wild life-- I liked the map and its information.The guide is a number of illustrations per page of mainly Reptiles and Birds. The illustrations are in colour and reasonable.You are told the name of the creature and its length or height.One pointer for identification may be given.The birds are males ,usually in breeding plumageSome will like this little work, others not.I personally liked it ( I wouldn't use it as my only guide to the Galápagos Wildlife )For me it filled a need for quick identification.I think it is worth the money

When I was in the Galapagos I used this every day. When I came home and made a photo album I referred to it constantly for my commentary on which bird or animal was which. It's so convenient because it's so compact and lightweight. It holds up well because it's laminated. For a serious birder, it might not be quite adequate. I'm not in that category so it was perfect for me. I just wanted the basics and there was nothing I couldn't find.

A pretty comprehensive, fold-out guide to the most common wildlife in the Galapagos. It's water-resistant, which is good for those who will be snorkeling or diving. One whole side is devoted to birds, which is great considering the numbers and diversity of species among the islands. For most travelers, this is probably sufficient if you're with a good naturalist guide.

Nice pics of the main animals I hope to see myself very soon. 6-page (front and back) fold-out pamphlet. Simplistic map on the back that shows Darwin's 1835 route and color-coded dots to show where the main animals can be found. .

This brochure was very useful while we were visiting the Galapagos Islands. It is light-weight and coated so it didn't get damaged by ocean spray. I used it to supplement my guide book, which I left in the cabin while out on the Zodiac and the islands.

This laminated, folded reference for the species you are likely to encounter in a trip to the Galapagos Islands is excellent. The pictures are very realistic, plus it includes the Latin names so that you can cross-reference the animal to a detailed guidebook or reference later. There are even short notes, such as "The similar Santa Fe land iguana is found only on Santa Fe Island" (if you are lucky enough to get to Santa Fe Island!).As our recent trip to the Galapagos included snorkeling (and yours might too), I greatly appreciated the page on Nearshore Fishes.

This is an excellent guide that I wished I had known about and purchased before visiting the Galapagos. Highly recommended to take when going to the enchanting and fascinating Galapagos Islands!
