Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Children's Book of 2013: The Day the Crayons Quit, Drew Daywalt’s clever story of a box of crayons gone rogue will get the whole family laughing at the letters written by the occupants of the ubiquitous yellow and green box. The combination of text and Oliver Jeffers' illustrations match the colors' personalities beautifully as the crayons share their concern, appreciation, or downright frustration: yellow and orange demand to know the true color of the sun, while green--clearly the people pleaser of the bunch--is happy with his workload of crocodiles, trees, and dinosaurs. Peach crayon wants to know why his wrapper was torn off, leaving him naked and in hiding; blue is exhausted and, well, worn out; and pink wants a little more paper time. The result of this letter writing campaign is colorful creativity and after reading this book I will never look at crayons the same way again--nor would I want to. ---Seira Wilson

From Booklist

Duncan’s crayons are on strike. One morning he opens his desk looking for them and, in their place, finds a pack of letters detailing their grievances, one crayon at a time. Red is tired. Beige is bored. Black is misunderstood. Peach is naked! The conceit is an enticing one, and although the crayons’ complaints are not entirely unique (a preponderance centers around some variation of overuse), the artist’s indelible characterization contributes significant charm. Indeed, Jeffers’ ability to communicate emotion in simple gestures, even on a skinny cylinder of wax, elevates crayon drawing to remarkable heights. First-class bookmaking, with clean design, ample trim size, and substantial paper stock, adds to the quality feel. A final spread sees all things right, as Duncan fills a page with bright, delightful imagery, addressing each of the crayons’ issues and forcing them into colorful cooperation. Kids who already attribute feelings to their playthings will never look at crayons the same way again. Grades K-3. --Thom Barthelmess

Brilliant!! Such a cute story - my 3 y/o adores it and I enjoy reading it :)

I don't want to be a complainer here but I just have to say that the curiosity of a 3 year old has limits and for some reason those limits require reading the same book over and over and over and over again. Which is great if the book you're reading is one of the good ones but horrible if it's lousy. What's that dear, you can't find the Daniel Tiger books? That's because I used them to light the fire used to heat all the food you dropped on the floor during dinner and then fed it to your little sister because, as you know, we don't waste food around here. Ahem, I mean, that's weird sweetie, I'm sure we'll find them. Some books deserve to be read umpteen times, some books are a disgraceful capitalistic ploy with no redeeming qualities. Coming off of an evening of one too many Elmo books (which means 1 Elmo book if you're keeping track), I vowed to find something funny, intelligent and fun to read. A book that my daughter would request without causing a 10 minute back and forth about how "we should really try reading this other, much better book that you are really going to love." A book that would make me say, "of course we can read that book dear, and might I add, excellent choice."Well that's what you get with The Day The Crayons Quit. This is a book by which all other kids books should be judged. This is a book that knows its audience isn't only your little angel but also the people who are reading to your little angel. And that is what makes this book so brilliant. No matter your age, you will identify with the characters, they will probably remind you of your family, your coworkers and your friends. This book is in my top 10 books to read to my daughter. Lucky for me, she feels the same way.In case you're wondering, some of my other favorites are: The Three Little Pigs, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Small Pig, Where the Wild Things Are, I Want My Hat Back, Pete The Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, We're Going on A Bear Hunt, The Cat in the Hat

We'd purchased this cute little book for our youngest grandson's second birthday about seven months ago and, according to my daughter-in-law, it's a book that's been pulled out almost every day since! It centers around a creative youngster named Duncan, who solves his crayons' complaints by thinking "outside of the BOX" (pun intended!), and our two older grandsons both enjoy reading it to their younger brother. In this book, that box happens to be full of crayons who don't actually quit, but do have a list of grievances they present to their owner, who comes up with a very inventive solution to get the result HE wants (to be able to color with crayons who are in agreeable moods!) by providing them what THEY need (to be used in more ways than their shades would stereotypically be used for.) The letters the crayons have written to their owner are hilarious, and having each separate letter written on the left side of the spread in a child's handwriting, with the right side showing a child-like drawing of objects that shade is typically used to color, is a sure-fire way to immediately draw a youngster in. Nice collaborative effort by author and illustrator! Our older grandsons have a lot of fun voicing the letters written by "Red", who even has to work on holidays (i.e. coloring Santas, Valentines), "Purple" is going to "completely lose it" if Duncan doesn't start coloring inside of the lines soon, "Beige" (who is "BEIGE and PROUD!") is jealous of "Brown", "Gray" is tired of getting all of the BIG jobs (like coloring elephants, rhinos, hippos and HUMPBACK WHALES), "White" is feeling underutilized, "Black" doesn't find it fair that he's only used as an outline to brightly colored objects, "Green" is a peacemaker type (or a tattle tale, depending upon your outlook!), who claims to be very happy with his work, congratulates Duncan on his coloring career, but wants to inform him of the bickering between "Yellow" and "Orange" over who gets to be the color of the sun, with "Yellow" and "Orange" writing separate letters each stating their case along with documented proof, "Blue" is overworked and now just a stub who can't even see over the box railing any longer, "Pink" believes she's experiencing discrimination because she's "a girls' color", while "Peach" is completely unwrapped ("I don't even have any underwear!") and embarrassed to leave the box. Wow - what a conundrum! But the amazingly colorful picture Duncan creates - allowing each crayon to stretch beyond their typical usages - ends up earning him an A for coloring and an A+ for creativity!Speaking both as a mom and now a grandma, I've come to believe that one of the most important things an adult can do for their children/grandchildren is to strongly encourage them to be creative and use their imaginations. Whether he/she eventually becomes an astrophysicist, a police officer, a stay-at-home mom or dad, etc., EVERY occupation requires the use of those mental tools when called upon to problem-solve and come up with solutions. How many bosses out there couldn't learn a thing or two from Duncan? Excellent little book that youngsters are going to really enjoy... and that adults can take a lesson from as well.

I read this book to my 5-year-old daughter and when we got to the end she asked me to read it again. When I got to the end of the second reading she announced she had an idea about drawing "live crayons like in the book" and embarked on a project of drawing different color crayons with colored wardrobes to match and made a "dress the crayons" game out of it. She loves to have books read to her, but this is one of the only times my short-attention-span kid has asked for the same book twice in a row and the first time a book as inspired such a burst of creativity. This book would be great for all sorts of ages: from very little kids who will like the idea of the talking crayons and the cute illustrations, to much older kids who will find the crayon's witty banter and creative complaints extremely funny. This is going to be my new gift for everything from baby showers to birthdays to Christmas! Don't hesitate to order this one, your kids will want to hear it over and over.

Such a fun book! I have such a blast reading this to my son. The book teaches little ones the importantance of sharing and playing fairly in such a funny way. Great for an introvert parent with a sense of humor...maybe some passive aggressiveness... Since you know, the crayons quit. It's fun to read this with different voices after a long day. (Storybook nanny on YouTube has a video of this book being read if you want to try before you buy)

The book is "cute" and mildly humorous. However, I was quite unhappy with the messages that it sent to kids. The crayons complain about being used too much, and -- worse from my point of view -- kids are admonished for not coloring within the lines. I prefer books for kids that foster creativity, not begin to stifle it from a very young age.

John Prados is well known to careful readers of World War II history as one of the best historical researchers and writers about the Pacific War. Here he turns his attention to the largest naval battle in history, the Battle for Leyte Gulf. Starting with C Vann Woodward's account of this battle, I have on my bookshelf no fewer than 10 other accounts all or part of this battle, some of them by other eminent historians including Evan Thomas and Anthony Tully, Robert Lundgren, and James Hornfischer. plus of course there are other versions incorporated into larger surveys of the Pacific war, going back to Samuel Eliot Morison's multi-volume history of the entire American naval side of WW II. So, what can be added at this date?Prados takes advantage of additional declassified information concerning US radio intelligence. He delves into the personalities of the major actors, including those in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He skillfully gives a thorough background, a vivid and detailed account of events, and a reasonable set of opinions about the many controversies. It is illuminating (at least to me) to read that Halsey could not have easily placed his fast battleships (the to-be-formed if needed Task Force 34) to guard the exit from the San Bernardino strait into Leyte Gulf against the advance of the Japanese surface forces under Admiral Kurita, given his geographic position when he decided to go north to chase the Japanese carrier fleet commanded by Admiral Ozawa. He offers the reasonable speculation that turn away from torpedoes that took his largest battleship, the Yamato, and the next most powerful, the Nagato out of the battle for a critial period was ordered by his subordinate Admiral Ugaki, who chafed under Kurita's command. All in all this is a well-written, thoroughly documented, and balanced view of a familiar story. It added to my knowledge and insight, and I'm glad to have read it.

In the entire history of naval warfare, there has never been a battle as large as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Fought between the juggernaut U.S. Navy and the desperate Imperial Japanese Navy in October, 1944, this battle saw the last attempt by the Japanese to inflict a crushing blow upon the Allies and swing the tides of war back into their favor.John Prados does a wonderful job of setting up the scene for this titanic clash, providing lots of information and detail on the planning which went into the battle, the forces involved, and the commanders calling the shots. He sheds light on the key role the Allied intelligence services played in deciphering Japanese plans and movements, as well as how key decisions in crucial moments came to play a major part in the outcome. Much has been written about the battle from an American standpoint, and this book helps balance things a bit by providing a good look at the Japanese viewpoint. Even though the Japanese faced long odds, they still felt a major victory could stem the Allied tide heading towards their shores. Prados examines the Japanese commanders, forces and decisions in great detail, thus helping the reader understand they hows and whys of their actions. He doesn't go into as much detail on the Allied (predominantly American) side, possibly because so much has previously been written from their viewpoint. Now, in a battle of this magnitude, decisions are made which don't always work out for the best. There's an old adage that no plan ever survives an encounter with the enemy, and this certainly applies in many aspects of the battle. While others have found fault in the decisions or indecision of both American and Japanese commanders, Prados examines things carefully and puts forth interesting and thought-provoking evidence which shows the decisions (or lack thereof) were actually not as bad as some have claimed, or else were simply the inevitable result of the mindset and training of those involved.Overall, a really excellent book which is heavier on the strategy and decisions involved than the actual combat, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. Having read several books on the battle, I was pleased to learn much more about the Japanese side of things, as well as how much the role of intelligence gathering played in the planning and outcome.Pick this one up--you won't be disappointed.

This British author speaks fluent Romanian, married a Romanian wife, and lived in Communist Romania. The result is well-researched history, supplemented by personal experience (such as his attempts to get an emigration permit for his wife).

How does someone find out about the organizational structure and the people within the Securitate (the secret security police of Romania)? Well, this book gives those details. An organization that is devoted to secrecy is opened to the public by this book. The Securitate was used effectively and efficiently by Ceausescu to remove all opposition to his rule and to keep his citizens in line through terror and fear. Ordinary citizens sometimes knew the agents installed in their schools, at their workspaces, or at their meeting places ... but they weren't always obvious ... many never knew who was an agent or an informer ... friends, coworkers, even family. How did normal, otherwise good people allow themselves to become a part of this repressive arm of Ceausescu's communist regime? Well, many of the answers are in this book. It discusses how the Communist Party gained support for the Securitate, how they coerced people into complying with the Securitate's demands, and even how some tried to rebel against the omnipresent Securitate.Although the long list of names, many of whom I have never heard of before, is occasionally boring, at least I know where to find them if I ever read about one of them. This is a subject that could consume many volumes if covered in detail (there are millions of files on citizens), but this book does an excellent job in the extent of its coverage while keeping the book small enough to hold in my lap.Unfortunately, the book is VERY hard to find. But if you can find it, you will be glad you bought it!

Probabaly what drew me to the book was the knowledge that Deletant had a long association with the regime of Ceasuescu and a strong academic understanding of the system. He writes with personal candour and an eye for a good story. He also has the ability to bring large numbers of facts together with consummate ease. Probably the best researched volume on the subject.

Looking primarily at 18th- and 19th-century Britain, she puts taxonomic, or classification, practices into their cultural context. Ritvo begins with a chapter on broad zoological classifications and their problems, followed by one on the history of zoological nomenclature?how and why we use the scientific names we use. The first two chapters are then placed in a wider context by chapters on hybrid animals, natural and unnatural monsters and abnormalities, and carnivorism. Ritvo's work is an insightful look at the development of English zoology and its strong ties to cultural context. As in her similar The Animal Estate (Harvard Univ., 1987), Ritvo rarely lapses into academic jargon. Recommended for larger public and academic libraries.?Eric D. Albright, Duke Medical Ctr. From Kirkus Reviews

This wide-ranging study of the ``heroic age of scientific classification'' attempts--with only partial success--to place the taxonomic advances and prejudices of 18th- and 19th-century England in a broader cultural context. MIT historian Ritvo (The Animal Estate, 1987) first analyzes the politics and ``broader allegiances'' that clouded the objectivity of zoologists who embraced the gargantuan task of ordering the biological world, even as British imperialism was rapidly expanding their knowledge of that world. The author exhaustively details the unprofessional behavior scientists resorted to for personal gain (such as needlessly inventing new species and naming them after their employers). Then she expands her definition of taxonomy to include the informal classification of animals by amateur naturalists, groups with specialized relationships to animals (like farmers, breeders, hunters, and pet owners), and the general meat-eating public. Ritvo persuasively argues that ``each of the ways . . . people imagined, discussed, and treated animals inevitably implied some taxonomic structure.'' Her analysis of how British sportsmen classified wild animals as game or vermin points to a more fundamental and still prevalent assumption that nature exists solely for human entertainment. Similarly, her analysis of the conflicts between hunters, farmers, and pet owners over the proper role of wild animals describes a cultural battle yet raging. Too often, though, Ritvo shies away from social analysis with a sense of propriety rivaling that of her Victorian subjects. Her introduction notes that ``worries about the concupiscence of human females structured the theory and practice of animal breeding''; in the text these worries are mentioned only briefly, and Victorian attitudes about female sexuality are dodged entirely. This hit-and-miss social commentary, combined with a penchant for inflated academic language (allayed only slightly by period cartoons), sabotages Ritvo's goal of illuminating the cultural ramifications of Enlightenment zoology. Harriet Ritvo's The Platypus and the Mermaid (and other figments of the classifying imagination) is an interesting look at the Victorian passion for classifying things. The book ranges and prowls over many communities from the scientific to the farmer to the sideshow. This is more about the lack of firm boundaries in Victorian society as science tried to define itself than the author's whim. But the author does handle the twists and turns adroitly. This is a good read and a wonderful look at the Victorian period and what the scientist and the lay person considered important in their need to classify their world, particulary as it grew with the growth of the British Empire.

Love how this book is so personal with places we have been! It is special to read and remember past vacations with our children.

I love this book! It hits all the highlights in Denver and my 20 month old son just loves it. I also sent it to his little cousins in Australia so they can see the things that my son is doing in denver. Going to City Park to play, going to the Zoo and the Butterfly Pavillion, spending time in the mountains learning to ski. It's just a wonderful little book.

great gift!

A fun addition to the Good Night series. My nephew enjoyed this one.

great Idea for a baby shower gift. Baby and parents can visit every where in the book and get pictures getting to know your town. Or give to New grandparents for fun things to do with grand children.

In this well-organized and well-edited book, Page clearly demonstrates why his course in Coursera is a hugely popular one. Anyone who has to deal with (or would like a more formal approach for thinking about) strategy, policy, processes, or systems will significantly benefit from this book. One could argue that the models presented are not new - and thats true; what is beneficial to the reader is the well-orchestrated progression of types of models and their assumptions, structure, limitations and examples.Page first makes a well-reasoned plea in favor of approaching any problem with a diverse set of models - each have various assumptions and may therefore implicitly capture (or discard) certain aspects of the system. After motivating the reader with basics of distributions, Page covers an extensive range of models ( a glimpse of the table of contents is sufficient for a potential reader to understand that various modeling techniques and learning mechanisms are covered). Page uses a variety of examples drawn from various domains, though skewed to policy/social sciences. The common theme is mostly "think strategically, in a tractable, explainable way'. The earlier chapters discussing aspects of a model in itself is a useful discussion. The book's organization largely follows his approach in his online course – a “visit to the zoo” - the order in which you visit the exhibits is not that crtitical (nor is this is a book to be necessarily read linearly). While the editing of the book is excellent (no extraneous information, fillers), the book is essentially a text book or a reference source. A student in engineering, political sciences, business/management and any practitioner in these fields will benefit from this book. Most of the content (if not all) is available for free in slightly different formats via his course. However, the utility of having a well-produced book that one can leaf through and pick models to investigate is a huge bonus. There are some changes that makes the content more streamlined too. One wishes there were more examples or challenges to the reader as a "homework'. Nevertheless, this is a must-have book for any one interested in modeling strategic and operational decisions and informatics/machine learning students.(Review Based on an ARC via NetGalley)

the most important thing to know about this 'textbook-like' work is that it takes the 'many model/ensemble' approach very, very seriously and pushes readers hard to think through the fundamentals of how they want to get value from their data....that said, page does an excellent job of addressing/describing those fundamentals....speaking as someone whose exposure to 'model building' came from horribly taught 'econometrics' classes and computationally-intensive engineering classes, i think page's approach far better than what i see in most university econ/engineering curricula.....and, honestly, this would be a terrific text for aspiring MBAs/execMBAs with 'equation-free' educations.....

I have been waiting for this book for 20 years. Too often, leaders of businesses and nonprofits are unaware of the many ways of seeing the world, of using different lenses. The book is not just about data and (clearly described, intuitive) math, it is about thinking logically and better understanding every aspect of the world. It should go beside Lars Skyttner's book on Systems Theory and the books Turning Numbers into Knowledge and Data Science for Business on the thinking person's bookshelf. It is never too late to exercise your brain!

Great book for anyone to read. You might also consider taking the MOOC Modeling Thinking course -- the two go really well together!

At first I thought this was an odd, over the top skim that lacked real meat. But as the author surveys more methods and starts to contrast them, the book turns into a sort of dictionary of models. It can serve as an important reference to anyone who builds models, especially as a source of alternatives, ways to branch out and look at your data in a new way, to see the strengths and limitations of methods you may be using -- or intend to use -- as defaults. The coverage is so broad, that even veterans may find new perspectives.

I’ve been a huge fan of the author. I watched several of his lecture series on Coursera and The Great Courses. The man is a genius. And this book opened my eyes to a whole new way of looking at the world. A must read.

Well written, very crafted design in the structure, carefully balanced between math formulas, intuition insight, and practical applications. Very unique in its kind.

Excellent book that has practical use.It covers many great topics and models for dealing with complex systems, such as convexity, game theory, network models, etc.Well worth a read and as a reference for future work.

This book is an excellent primer on Nouwen. A friend of mine suggested I check him out, so I picked up this book. Chapters are divided by concept and each one references a number of the many, many books he's written. Since reading this book, I've bought 5 more by him. On top of all that, it's pretty compact and would easily fit in a small bag.

A fragmented collection

WOnderful book!Great for a daily meditation!

This book is a big help for those starting to read Henri Nouwen for its very scholarly yet easy reading style. But it also useful for those who have read Nouwen extensively to help make a very clear and organized way of Nouwen's big ideas.

Thank you!

Excellent book! A refreshing renewal of spirituality!

Book club

A very interesting work by an author with an extremely varied Christian life of service.
