An important book on many levels." ―Booklist (Starred Review; Top 10 Sports Nonfiction: 2018)"Samaha zooms into the pressing, complicated conversations around privilege, gentrification, and anti-blackness in America . . . The result is a captivating book that will make you feel like you're right at the sidelines, breath held, rooting for the team." ―BuzzFeed Books (Best Books of Fall 2018)"What journalist H.G. Bissinger did for high school football in Friday Night Lights, Samaha does for a youth football league in the mostly black Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn. . . The final product is a joy for readers, an island of hope." ―Library Journal (Starred Review)"Filled with as much heart and grit as the boys who run through its pages . . . Packed with smart social commentary, sobering facts and the fierce joy of the game, Never Ran, Never Will is a complicated yet hopeful story of football and community." ―Shelf Awareness (Starred Review)"Refreshing and raw, Never Ran, Never Will tracks the boys of Brownsville, Brooklyn as they age out of innocence and details the efforts of the devoted men and women laboring to guide them into adulthood. This is a beautifully written and moving book that discusses important issues. The decline of youth football programs may have negative consequences for youth that benefitted from them. The headlines about chronic trauma encephelopathy from playing football have outraced the science and there is much that is not known about what the effects of playing youth and high school football are on long term mental health and cognition. The currently published studies that have used population samples have not found harmful effects and even found evidence of a slight benefit perhaps because physical activity is beneficial (Deshpande SK, et al. ,2017, Association of playing high school football with cognition and mental health later in life. JAMA Neurol 74(8):909–918; Savica R, Parisi JE, Wold LE, Josephs KA, Ahlskog JE (2012) High school football and risk of neurodegeneration: A community-based study. Mayo Clin Proc 87(4):335–340; Janssen PH, et al. (2017) High-school football and late-life risk of neurodegenerative syndroms, 1956 -- 1970. Mayo Clin Proc 92(1):66–71). A study that used a volunteer sample, which may result in selection and referral bias, found a positive association between head trauma and later-life cognitive impairment and depression (Montenigro PH, et al. (2016) Cumulative Head Impact Exposure Predicts Later-Life Depression, Apathy, Executive Dysfunction, and Cognitive Impairment in Former High School and College Football Players. J Neurotrauma 13(617):0–55).

Albert Samaha's "Never Ran, Never Will" is a page-turning wonder. Started reading and I couldn't put it down. It's a New York story, but it's an American story. If you've read Samaha's work before you'll instantly recognize his attention to detail and his natural way of captivating his audience. It's a must read for people, not just sports fans.

Samaha does a beautifully responsible job of sharing a community's story - from the compelling individuals who make up the neighborhood, to the sociopolitical forces shaping the world these kids step into. One of the best books I've read in quite some time.

I couldn't stop crying reading this book. Samaya writes about boyhood, sports, and poverty in a way that is so powerful and resonates long after the last word is read. I'm grateful for this relentless reporting, wonderful storytelling, and powerful commentary on the rise of gentrification in cities across the country.

When I started reading it, I couldn't put down the book, because I wanted to know what's next? Will the boys make it to the championship? I wanted them to. What is interesting is that it also talks about the history of Brooklyn. I finished it in 2 nights & 3 days! Written very well.

Samaha is a compelling writer and this is a great story.

Samaha is a stunning writer. His dedication to the story is compelling and inspiring.

It takes a lot of courage to jump in and fight against the riptide of systemic racism, low-performing schools, familial economic strain and the lure of drugs in the East Brooklyn neighborhood of Brownsville. Chris Legree and his fellow coaches in the Mo Better Jaguar football program fight a daily battle to help young men stay the course, better themselves through sport, and hopefully escape the streets. This is the story told in Albert Samaha’s exceptional ethnographical book Never Ran, Never Will. With shrinking rosters and health concerns, Samaha’s takes a penetrating look at the value of youth football in the inner city. His balanced reporting chronicles the successes and unfortunate tragedies in the history of the football organization. The first part of the book briefly details the 2013 season, but mainly focuses on the author’s tremendous research that lays the foundation for so many important discussions in the book. One needs to know the history of Brownsville, the state of law enforcement laws in NYC, and the economics of the transitioning neighborhoods to understand the plight of these young men. From stable middle-class families, immigrant families, and broken homes, Samaha relates the lives of about a half a dozen players and three coaches. The second part of the book takes a deeper dive into the 2014 season. Told with great intensity, the reader cannot help but root for the boys to win. What struck me the most about this book was the overwhelming impression of the power of a mentor. Several studies over the last ten years have shown the considerable effect positive mentoring can have on youth. As Samaha writes: From ages 10-12, these boys “age out of innocence.” Gio, Hart, Isaiah, and Oomz are boys that need men like Chris, Esau, and Vick in their lives. These men structure their family lives and their jobs around the demands of the program, and should be lauded for that dedication.Never Ran, Never Will belongs on the shelf next to Kotlowitz’s There Are No Children Here, Wojnarowski’s The Miracle of St. Anthony, and Coyle’s Hardball. This is an important book that poses real questions about what will fill the void if football and other sports disappear from inner cities. The author cares enough to look at all the factors that affect this neighborhood, and confesses in the introduction that he is one of the people who has moved into and gentrified these neighborhoods. His honesty provides a clear view, a transparency that only comes in the most honest and dedicated of writing. Thank you to Mr. Samaha for writing about these boys and their devoted mentors.

Heard of this book via its social sharing launch and had to have it. As a member of the generation who was in elementary school when the Beatles were introduced to America, I know how keenly they shaped our generation. This is a fabulous way to tell the story to children of who these four men were. Masterfully written, beautifully illustrated. Already getting another copy to donate to my local elementary school. Robin Thompson

What a fun book! In big, bold colors it tells the story of The Beatles and the music they created. From their birth in 1940's Liverpool we learn how they met one another and their musical heroes such as Elvis and Little Richard. The book has full page illustrations and images of their journey to stardom as they conquer the US. It is a well written story that makes you want to read it again... and then tell all your friends about. I really love the colors that are used and the hardback cover will stand up to a lot of wear and tear by my kids. I bought a few of these as gifts and kept one for my bookshelf. The Beatles for Kidz

A great recount of an amazing band keeping the story of the "Fab 4" alive for generations to come. My daughter loves our Sunday mornings and "Breakfast with the Beatles" and this book illustrates the songs she has come to love. A fantastic gift for any Beatles fan, whatever the generation!

This book is an interesting and fun way to educate kids. Sure all the little songs they pickup on TV are cute but why not start introducing your kids to real history and culture. It’s so much more engaging than just hearing the music as they will eventually. Kids love books and this one will really keep their interest. I only wish I could find books for other artists and genres!

Informative, yet fun book about how the fab 4 met and became the giants they were. An easy read with spectacular illustrations, a must have. I give it a10✌️👍🌹💕

Just ordered “The Beatles for Kidz” for my little Ruby girl💛 She loves The Beatles music already (who doesn’t) & I’m excited for her to learn more about how the Fab Four came to fame!

Love this book. What a great way to get little ones to learn and enjoy the Beatles. After we read the book, I played some songs for my little nephew and he really enjoyed spending the time, listening and learning.

Had to get this book for my grandkids who are beatle fans!! Didn’t disappoint!

The prices in this book are out of date - it was published in 2001 and in 2005 the prices across the board were about 30% higher. Budget conscious Las Vegas visitors will want to keep that in mind.Otherwise it was a terrific resource for "freebies" and kid-friendly attractions.

I have enjoyed Las Vegas as a single tourist in the past, but when I decided to bring my family to Las Vegas, I knew that I needed to do some planning. I never knew just how family-friendly Las Vegas really was! The Lobster Kids' Guide to Exploring Las Vegas was a critical resource that made better use of our time. This book provided me with creativity and adventure. I was able to plan out our vacation and make last minute decisions with the direction from this author, who's descriptions were "right on". And, there was a large variety of activities to choose from. My family absolutely loved our vacation and I loved the ease of it all (descriptions, tips, directions, price info, etc.). Thanks to the help from this book, I know that the memories of our vacation will last a lifetime!

This book is great if you plan on visting Vegas with the kids in mind. It gives a good description of the attractions, addresses, phone numbers, height restrictions, and prices. We've started checking off the things we've done in the table of contents. The only downfall is it doesn't really give a review of great buffets...only some suggestions of kid friendly eateries.

Great biography of his life.

much said throughout the book about how little he had earned compared to his peers. I understand that feeling but we all make our own decisions in life, some good some bad. Despite my empathy I found that aspect rather tedious.

A very good read, sadly Steve was killed in helicopter crash while writing this book

I've always been a fan of Hizzy, and this gave me an insight into the man, and how things work in the world of motorsport.

Good stuff.

The Day the Crayons Quit, by Drew Daywalt Oliver Jeffers

Amazon.com Review

Amazon Best Children's Book of 2013: The Day the Crayons Quit, Drew Daywalt’s clever story of a box of crayons gone rogue will get the whole family laughing at the letters written by the occupants of the ubiquitous yellow and green box. The combination of text and Oliver Jeffers' illustrations match the colors' personalities beautifully as the crayons share their concern, appreciation, or downright frustration: yellow and orange demand to know the true color of the sun, while green--clearly the people pleaser of the bunch--is happy with his workload of crocodiles, trees, and dinosaurs. Peach crayon wants to know why his wrapper was torn off, leaving him naked and in hiding; blue is exhausted and, well, worn out; and pink wants a little more paper time. The result of this letter writing campaign is colorful creativity and after reading this book I will never look at crayons the same way again--nor would I want to. ---Seira Wilson

From Booklist

Duncan’s crayons are on strike. One morning he opens his desk looking for them and, in their place, finds a pack of letters detailing their grievances, one crayon at a time. Red is tired. Beige is bored. Black is misunderstood. Peach is naked! The conceit is an enticing one, and although the crayons’ complaints are not entirely unique (a preponderance centers around some variation of overuse), the artist’s indelible characterization contributes significant charm. Indeed, Jeffers’ ability to communicate emotion in simple gestures, even on a skinny cylinder of wax, elevates crayon drawing to remarkable heights. First-class bookmaking, with clean design, ample trim size, and substantial paper stock, adds to the quality feel. A final spread sees all things right, as Duncan fills a page with bright, delightful imagery, addressing each of the crayons’ issues and forcing them into colorful cooperation. Kids who already attribute feelings to their playthings will never look at crayons the same way again. Grades K-3. --Thom Barthelmess

Brilliant!! Such a cute story - my 3 y/o adores it and I enjoy reading it :)

I don't want to be a complainer here but I just have to say that the curiosity of a 3 year old has limits and for some reason those limits require reading the same book over and over and over and over again. Which is great if the book you're reading is one of the good ones but horrible if it's lousy. What's that dear, you can't find the Daniel Tiger books? That's because I used them to light the fire used to heat all the food you dropped on the floor during dinner and then fed it to your little sister because, as you know, we don't waste food around here. Ahem, I mean, that's weird sweetie, I'm sure we'll find them. Some books deserve to be read umpteen times, some books are a disgraceful capitalistic ploy with no redeeming qualities. Coming off of an evening of one too many Elmo books (which means 1 Elmo book if you're keeping track), I vowed to find something funny, intelligent and fun to read. A book that my daughter would request without causing a 10 minute back and forth about how "we should really try reading this other, much better book that you are really going to love." A book that would make me say, "of course we can read that book dear, and might I add, excellent choice."Well that's what you get with The Day The Crayons Quit. This is a book by which all other kids books should be judged. This is a book that knows its audience isn't only your little angel but also the people who are reading to your little angel. And that is what makes this book so brilliant. No matter your age, you will identify with the characters, they will probably remind you of your family, your coworkers and your friends. This book is in my top 10 books to read to my daughter. Lucky for me, she feels the same way.In case you're wondering, some of my other favorites are: The Three Little Pigs, Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, Small Pig, Where the Wild Things Are, I Want My Hat Back, Pete The Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, We're Going on A Bear Hunt, The Cat in the Hat

We'd purchased this cute little book for our youngest grandson's second birthday about seven months ago and, according to my daughter-in-law, it's a book that's been pulled out almost every day since! It centers around a creative youngster named Duncan, who solves his crayons' complaints by thinking "outside of the BOX" (pun intended!), and our two older grandsons both enjoy reading it to their younger brother. In this book, that box happens to be full of crayons who don't actually quit, but do have a list of grievances they present to their owner, who comes up with a very inventive solution to get the result HE wants (to be able to color with crayons who are in agreeable moods!) by providing them what THEY need (to be used in more ways than their shades would stereotypically be used for.) The letters the crayons have written to their owner are hilarious, and having each separate letter written on the left side of the spread in a child's handwriting, with the right side showing a child-like drawing of objects that shade is typically used to color, is a sure-fire way to immediately draw a youngster in. Nice collaborative effort by author and illustrator! Our older grandsons have a lot of fun voicing the letters written by "Red", who even has to work on holidays (i.e. coloring Santas, Valentines), "Purple" is going to "completely lose it" if Duncan doesn't start coloring inside of the lines soon, "Beige" (who is "BEIGE and PROUD!") is jealous of "Brown", "Gray" is tired of getting all of the BIG jobs (like coloring elephants, rhinos, hippos and HUMPBACK WHALES), "White" is feeling underutilized, "Black" doesn't find it fair that he's only used as an outline to brightly colored objects, "Green" is a peacemaker type (or a tattle tale, depending upon your outlook!), who claims to be very happy with his work, congratulates Duncan on his coloring career, but wants to inform him of the bickering between "Yellow" and "Orange" over who gets to be the color of the sun, with "Yellow" and "Orange" writing separate letters each stating their case along with documented proof, "Blue" is overworked and now just a stub who can't even see over the box railing any longer, "Pink" believes she's experiencing discrimination because she's "a girls' color", while "Peach" is completely unwrapped ("I don't even have any underwear!") and embarrassed to leave the box. Wow - what a conundrum! But the amazingly colorful picture Duncan creates - allowing each crayon to stretch beyond their typical usages - ends up earning him an A for coloring and an A+ for creativity!Speaking both as a mom and now a grandma, I've come to believe that one of the most important things an adult can do for their children/grandchildren is to strongly encourage them to be creative and use their imaginations. Whether he/she eventually becomes an astrophysicist, a police officer, a stay-at-home mom or dad, etc., EVERY occupation requires the use of those mental tools when called upon to problem-solve and come up with solutions. How many bosses out there couldn't learn a thing or two from Duncan? Excellent little book that youngsters are going to really enjoy... and that adults can take a lesson from as well.

I read this book to my 5-year-old daughter and when we got to the end she asked me to read it again. When I got to the end of the second reading she announced she had an idea about drawing "live crayons like in the book" and embarked on a project of drawing different color crayons with colored wardrobes to match and made a "dress the crayons" game out of it. She loves to have books read to her, but this is one of the only times my short-attention-span kid has asked for the same book twice in a row and the first time a book as inspired such a burst of creativity. This book would be great for all sorts of ages: from very little kids who will like the idea of the talking crayons and the cute illustrations, to much older kids who will find the crayon's witty banter and creative complaints extremely funny. This is going to be my new gift for everything from baby showers to birthdays to Christmas! Don't hesitate to order this one, your kids will want to hear it over and over.

Such a fun book! I have such a blast reading this to my son. The book teaches little ones the importantance of sharing and playing fairly in such a funny way. Great for an introvert parent with a sense of humor...maybe some passive aggressiveness... Since you know, the crayons quit. It's fun to read this with different voices after a long day. (Storybook nanny on YouTube has a video of this book being read if you want to try before you buy)

The book is "cute" and mildly humorous. However, I was quite unhappy with the messages that it sent to kids. The crayons complain about being used too much, and -- worse from my point of view -- kids are admonished for not coloring within the lines. I prefer books for kids that foster creativity, not begin to stifle it from a very young age.

John Prados is well known to careful readers of World War II history as one of the best historical researchers and writers about the Pacific War. Here he turns his attention to the largest naval battle in history, the Battle for Leyte Gulf. Starting with C Vann Woodward's account of this battle, I have on my bookshelf no fewer than 10 other accounts all or part of this battle, some of them by other eminent historians including Evan Thomas and Anthony Tully, Robert Lundgren, and James Hornfischer. plus of course there are other versions incorporated into larger surveys of the Pacific war, going back to Samuel Eliot Morison's multi-volume history of the entire American naval side of WW II. So, what can be added at this date?Prados takes advantage of additional declassified information concerning US radio intelligence. He delves into the personalities of the major actors, including those in the Imperial Japanese Navy. He skillfully gives a thorough background, a vivid and detailed account of events, and a reasonable set of opinions about the many controversies. It is illuminating (at least to me) to read that Halsey could not have easily placed his fast battleships (the to-be-formed if needed Task Force 34) to guard the exit from the San Bernardino strait into Leyte Gulf against the advance of the Japanese surface forces under Admiral Kurita, given his geographic position when he decided to go north to chase the Japanese carrier fleet commanded by Admiral Ozawa. He offers the reasonable speculation that turn away from torpedoes that took his largest battleship, the Yamato, and the next most powerful, the Nagato out of the battle for a critial period was ordered by his subordinate Admiral Ugaki, who chafed under Kurita's command. All in all this is a well-written, thoroughly documented, and balanced view of a familiar story. It added to my knowledge and insight, and I'm glad to have read it.

In the entire history of naval warfare, there has never been a battle as large as the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Fought between the juggernaut U.S. Navy and the desperate Imperial Japanese Navy in October, 1944, this battle saw the last attempt by the Japanese to inflict a crushing blow upon the Allies and swing the tides of war back into their favor.John Prados does a wonderful job of setting up the scene for this titanic clash, providing lots of information and detail on the planning which went into the battle, the forces involved, and the commanders calling the shots. He sheds light on the key role the Allied intelligence services played in deciphering Japanese plans and movements, as well as how key decisions in crucial moments came to play a major part in the outcome. Much has been written about the battle from an American standpoint, and this book helps balance things a bit by providing a good look at the Japanese viewpoint. Even though the Japanese faced long odds, they still felt a major victory could stem the Allied tide heading towards their shores. Prados examines the Japanese commanders, forces and decisions in great detail, thus helping the reader understand they hows and whys of their actions. He doesn't go into as much detail on the Allied (predominantly American) side, possibly because so much has previously been written from their viewpoint. Now, in a battle of this magnitude, decisions are made which don't always work out for the best. There's an old adage that no plan ever survives an encounter with the enemy, and this certainly applies in many aspects of the battle. While others have found fault in the decisions or indecision of both American and Japanese commanders, Prados examines things carefully and puts forth interesting and thought-provoking evidence which shows the decisions (or lack thereof) were actually not as bad as some have claimed, or else were simply the inevitable result of the mindset and training of those involved.Overall, a really excellent book which is heavier on the strategy and decisions involved than the actual combat, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't read it. Having read several books on the battle, I was pleased to learn much more about the Japanese side of things, as well as how much the role of intelligence gathering played in the planning and outcome.Pick this one up--you won't be disappointed.
