The Shackled Continent: Power, Corruption, and African Lives, by Robert Guest

Review

“Rarely does an author combine experience, common sense and humour when writing about Africa. It's even rarer when the analysis is as hard-hitting as in the writing of Robert Guest.” Roger Bate, Wall Street Journal. “I doubt whether there is a better brief introduction to the travails of modern Africa and their causes.” Anthony Daniels, Sunday Telegraph. "An excellent book. Timely, provocative and written throughout with a passion for Africa and Africans." Bob Geldof “astute and clever…[Guest has] an extremely strong and rationalist grasp of the present, and travels with the classical economists David Ricardo and Adam Smith as inspiration. The Shackled Continent is a lively and provocative read.” RW Johnson, Sunday Times.  “[Guest] is a lively and observant reporter. He portrays, with humour and some compassion, how nothing really works in most African countries. The reader can learn much from this lively and outspoken book.” Anthony Sampson, The Guardian. “Anyone who wants to be reminded of the horrors of Africa, economic or otherwise, will be interested to read this intelligent but light treatise.” Christopher Ondaatje, Literary Review. “It seems odd that Robert Guest causes as much trouble as he does. The 33-year old Africa editor of the influential Economist magazine is personable, witty [and] eminently reasonable. But [he] brings people’s blood to boiling point quicker than one can say The Shackled Continent.”Jeremy Gordin, The Star, South Africa. “This is the kind of book you read holding your nose. Even H.M. Stanley, the British journalist/explorer who lived fat on the weird stories about Africa he published in his journals, [would have been] ashamed of some of the views expressed by Guest.” Osei Boateng, New African.“This is the book for those who despair for Africa, but even more, it is the book for those who despise Africa. [Guest's writing reveals] his journalist's determination to unravel Africa's complicated, seemingly intractable problems and his economists' determination to rectify them. . . . You can't know how cynical and complacent you've become about the world's problems until you take this journey with Robert Guest.”—Debra Dickerson, author of The End of Blackness: Returning the Souls of Black Folk to their Rightful Owners.“Guest recognizes that the economic modernization he advocates comes with a price, but he is nonetheless optimistic. Readers may be moved enough to find ways of being so, too.”—Publishers Weekly

Definityely 5 stars for this excellently written book. The narrative is smooth flowing, easy to read and follow, with admirable clarity and honesty of what is being told, interpreted, surmised, unravaled or analyzed.I read it from cover to cover. It's like embarking on a journey through Africa and discovering, sometimes surprisingly, facts about this complex and beautiful continent which you were either unaware of, or just didn't care to know about before. As the author points out, tribalism, abuse of power and corruption of post colonial leaders are significant root causes of SubSaharan Africa's seemingly perpetual poverty. The deplorable conditions encourage educated professionals to emigrate to other (non-African)countries, thus depriving Africa of badly needed talent. But the author also stresses that elimination or at least significant mitigation of the widespread corruption and ineptness of the governing power will eventually lead the continent to prosperity. A new generation of skillful and educated Africans will inevitably and hopefully emerge to institute a massive cleanup of what the author calls as "thugocracy". The book is a coverage of Africa from a journalistic and economist point of view, the author being both a good journalist and economist. And this coverage skillfully told in a very interesting understandable style. As I have mentioned previuosly in another African review ,we have become too overly exposed to the conflicts of the Middle East to such a degree that we tend to ignore Africa (subSaharan) and its people. It is hoped that when you take this journey with Robert Guest, you will become more broadminded and feel more compassion and respect for this remarkable continent wracked by post colonial civil wars and their after effects, and receiving insufficient attention by the international community. Yet,despite all these devastation and painfully slow rehabilitation, the comments and anecdotes expressed by the people who can still afford to retain their sense of humor, somehow suggest hope. The progress which is reflected by South Africa may serve as a beacon of hope for the rest of the continent. This hope is somehow depicted in the last paragraph of the last chapter of the book: The author was talking to a 19 yr old youth who, after the civil wars, began raising and processing chickens for a living. The author commented that the Japanese labored for a century before they caught up with the West. The African boy shrugged his shoulders."We can do it,too," he replied,"And besides, raising chickens is better than fighting." I highly recommend this book to everyone who knows plenty, knows little or knows nothing about Africa.

Guest fills his book with first hand, vivid examples. This is a perfect companion volume to Martin Meredith's excellent The Fate of Africa, and it is hard for me to tell which of them is the better master of building a proper sentence. Though both of these men catalogue the problems with depressing thorougness, neither of them delve into the worldview that perpetuates the shackles. However, Guest has done a remarkable service by recording so many first hand accounts from a broad section of countries on the continent.

There are an abundance of books and articles hypothesizing the reasons why African nations are so poor, the majority of which blame rich countries and European colonialism. Robert Guest, African correspondent for The Economist, briefly discusses and then dismisses these arguments as being the primary culprits by putting them in historical context against other nations that have similar histories.Instead, Guest focuses on issues endemic to Africa, giving hope to improvements coming from within the continent and hope of a more stable, healthier and wealthier future. While Guest argues that there is need for aid in Africa, he outlines why, how and where the aid should be targeted, noting that much more can be achieved through less costly but better focused reforms. The Shackled Continent is a pleasure to read as Guest's style is both interesting and informative. He uses personal accounts, first-person interviews and historical reference to solidify his points and lends an overall hopeful tone to his book.

It is a few years old now so needs to be read with a pinch of salt or an updated knowledge of Africa, but the book is brilliant and completely on target.

Africa, how did it get that way, and who's fault is it?Guest puts his gift for prose and analysis on full display in this fascinating page turner. He avoids the pitfall that so often engulfs writers who take on the subject of Africa, in blaming the West for the horrors that pass for everyday occurrences on the "Dark Continent". In fact, Guest probably is guilty of going too far the other way and assigning almost total blame on the Africans themselves.Truth be told, his perception is more accurate than the opposite school, and as ubiquitous as that pandering thought is, this is a breath of fresh air.Imminently readable and evidence of decades of travel all over sub-Saharan Africa, this is a must read for anyone interested in analyzing the most horrific examples of human endeavor (Africa).

Amazing insight of Africa

It's difficult to make a brief and fair review to such a good book. Learning about author's journey, from somebody sound-challenged to a sound therapist was very inspiring and I found a lot more than I expected. Easy to read, very informative and captivating. If you're interested in this book, here's what I'd like to share:- The book is very well structured and provides detailed instructions for those practice-oriented as well as lots of references and bibliography for those who want more scientific background.- This is the easiest and most effective energy healing method that I've ever seen. I've been trained before into some similar others that are more complicated, more expensive and far less efficient. I've been able to correct easily some health issues half way into the book.- There are some procedures that I haven't seen elsewhere, very effective and easy to integrate in other therapeutic practices (ex. the adrenal rhythm balancing). There's more on author's web site and on youtube, you may want to see that first (google author's name).- The author takes a methodical, scientific approach without getting lost in science or falling into esoteric too much. About half of the book (by pages) is about scientific theories to explain why it could work and half about what she found and how to use it.- The book contains a lot of information from many sources, blended with author's experience in 19+ years, in a clear and useable manner. You will need a tuning fork to work on somebody else (see the author's web site for the kits) and you may need to know a minimum of energy healing if you want to work on yourself (I used Reiki but anything similar will do, maybe e-mail to the author or ask around, it's quite easy). The information can be used with other methods, even without the tuning forks, if you know how.- The book offers a practical way to verify some theories about chakras and biofield/aura. You can say that's not true until you do what it says and feel it. It works regardless of your beliefs.- By "weight" probably the book is 80-90% real stuff about what to do and how to do it. It's so detailed that later I bought the DVD thinking I'm going to learn the method faster. It was true, the DVD helped a lot. But all that information is actually in the book, clearly described by the author without any tricks. All you need to do is just read, understand, then take a tuning fork and do it as described in the book. It's really easy!- I probably can't emphasize enough, but the information in it is priceless, and it's assembled in an easy to use format that you won't find elsewhere for just the price of this book, maybe unless you spend years and thousands of dollars. Half way through this book I unexpectedly found the answer to a chronic health issue that affected me for the last five years, for which I spent before quite a lot of time and money. I applied what I read immediately and that was the permanent fix. Can't say it's all that easy but if a skeptical engineer like me could do it, I think anybody can do it. Just trust yourself, there's nothing to fear and nothing to lose.I would strongly encourage anyone interested to give it a try. You'll be happy you did it.

I personally promise you this is The best book you will EVER read about the Revolutionary and Transformative Science of Tuning the Human Biofield and how her protocol can potentially balance/clear/transform iit. EIleen teaches her protocol, and you can find out more and even see her doing it on her DVD and on her website biofieldtuning.com . It's truly amazing, and with her scientific approach to this unique subject matter, I can say from personal experience (distant healing sessions from her (Vermont) to me (California) I can attest to her amazing insight without ever meeting me. She told me about my childhood trauma, trauma as a teen and adult, and so much more she would have never known without having conversations or meeting me face to face. (which she Did NOT) Please read this book, you will find out more about her and how she discovered this new way of helping to heal our past traumas, both emotional and physical. If you have any healers in your family, please share this book with them. Together, perhaps we can all help transform our world into a kinder, gentler place.Update: I signed up to take her course in San Diego in December of 2015 taking a chance as A Senior ( not in highschool :)) that perhaps it might be too complicated like it was at Acutonics ( acutonics is mostly for acupuncturists to use tuning forks )for me as a non medical person . I was SO surprised it really works , I learned it, and the shifts are profound at a distance too as I have been practicing on humans and dogs since class. I am at Level 2 class now and after studying many energy healing modalities ( reiki, soma energetics, psychk, matrix energetics, healing touch , the emotion code, theta healing plus) this is the shortest and most direct route I have found. Bless you Eileen McKusick.

So I expected that the book would be mostly about technique and that's not the case. The first three-quarters of the book is very scientific and detailed and while fascinating it was a little tough for me to get through. Scientific minds would have probably sailed right through it, but it was a little more challenging for me. I would have loved more explanation of technique and mapping of the biofield. I am glad that I stuck with it and hope to integrate this method into my Reiki practice, I find it fascinating and it does make complete sense to me.Thanks to the author for sharing her many years of experience and knowledge!

Hancock & Bauval prove, thru archeo-astronomy, that the Great Sphinx in Egypt is much older than previously thought. Originally claimed to have been built in 2,500 BCE, they show a more likely date of 10,500 BCE. Working with astronomical software, they were able to determine that the Sphinx, originally carved with a lion's face as well as body, greeted the rising constellation of Leo on the morning of the Spring Equinox around 10,500 BCE. The Sphinx, which faces due east, was a monument to celebrate the Spring Equinox back during Egypt's Golden Age. The ancient Egyptians were indeed accomplished astronomers.

When the Orion alignment of the pyramids at Giza was first suggested decades ago, it was ignored as some fringe idea. Now it is widely accepted and archaeoastronomy has matured as a respected discipline. This is one of the books that really explained it all. I had read some of this years ago in Hancock's Fingerprints Of The Gods, but I still wondered what I would encounter here. While Hancock/Buval have uncovered many fascinating things in their books, sometimes they do go over the deep end (like Hancock's book on supposed structures on Mars. One of the few blatant oddities in this book is when they imply there is no reason to believe Eden was real, a "hard-to-find, never-never land," apparently not noticing that the Bible gives a precise geographic location for it). Nevertheless, this is a fairly orthodox look at alignments of Giza, dating issues with the Sphinx, the challenges of building the pyramids and so forth. The most important question is this: Why were the pyramids aligned to star patterns that were overhead thousands of years before they were built? 10,500 BC was a time of turmoil for mankind. Few now dispute that some worldwide catastrophe caused havoc to man and put a final end to the ice ages. The causes are debated (see The Cycle of Cosmic Catastrophes and Forgotten Civilization), but the actual event is not. Were the pyramids simply marking this date? What are we to make of the empty tombs inside? Are the chambers all there is, or is much more hidden within and underneath these monuments? Students of history will be troubled that so many roadblocks are often put up against bringing modern science's best tech to explore these sites. The potential new chambers and caverns that have been found over the past 3 decades should be sufficient cause for a new era an Egyptian archaeological study.

There's something going on here and I think Hancock is on to something, his other books detail that civilization as we know it is a LOT older than we think. The main stream Archaeologist seem to have a problem getting past the 4,000 year mark, but other scientific disciplines are pushing the envelope. "On land as in the SKY" the astrological connection of the layout of the Giza Plaza and the night sky 12,500 years ago are identical. Makes one wonder what knowledge was really lost in the pre history Global Floods.

I have read numerous books dealing with ancient puzzles and mysteries. All of those books and including this one, raises more questions than it answers. If you cannot rely on traditional scientist to tell you the whole truth, without distortion, how can you trust these authors ?To cross check many of the statements of fact put forward by the authors would be beyond the ability of 99% of the readers of this book (myself included) and other books of similar genre, hence the alleged statements of fact or theories raised will remain a unproven or uncorroborated unless the authors do more than footnote and cross reference to prove their allegations. However, Hanncock, I think, has debunked all of the theories put forward by egyptologists regarding the building of the pyramids. That in itself raises the very disturbing questions of how the pyramids were built.I enjoy Hanncock's books, whether they be read as scientic research or "X files " type novels. Regardless, many of the "facts " we believe to day will be disproved in the future. Who knows ? Maybe Hannock and Co are right.

Although this book is "old" (1996) the information presented was extremely interesting. So much so that I am hoping that the authors will go back to this book and update the information and questions it had presented. Found the description of entering and walking through the Great Pyramid very interesting making one feel as though they were walking into the great structure yourself.

Hancock and Bauval give logical and reasonable explenations to many of the Giza mysteries. They back their theories with plenty of research and sources. Although most of the book did not speak of the Sphinx itself but of the overall Giza complex, it gives you plenty on the Sphinx itself. Do not expect any of their work to be backed up by "scholarly" sources. Egyptology today is like the church of the middle ages. If it goes against their theories it must be false. Do expect lots of references and inferences based on those references.

This is a large book but worth having on your coffee table, it is full of pictures and infomation on the sphinx, it is nice to keep checking on the history of these great sites and the hundreds of years they have been there

I liked this book very much. I don't necessarily agree with it all but Graham Hancock has some wild theories that are very interesting to imagine. It is hard to say what has happened in the past and too many people shut down possibilities like this all the time just to find out later that the person they thought was crazy was right all along. Very interesting, very compelling.

Review

"Ariès traces Western man's attitudes toward mortality from the early medieval conception of death as the familiar collective destiny of the human race to the modern tendency, so pronounced in industrial societies, to hide death as if it were an embarrassing family secret." (Newsweek)"An astounding story, told with the incisiveness and mastery characteristic of Ariès's work." (Robert Darnton New York Review of Books)

A lot of the claims of this book have been superseded by more recent research on managing the final moments of life. I'd recommend Allan Kellehear, Atul Gawande and Joan Lynn. In terms of the medieval material, I'd encourage more specialized treatments, such as Amy Appleford's recent study on the Art of Dying. Ashby Kinch's study of the "Imago mortis" is also good (albeit specialized).

A fantastic read - both brief and accessible as well as informative and challenging. Phillipe Aries' seminal study of how the treatment of death and dying has changed dramatically in Western Civilization should provoke the reader to think about death as more than something to be avoided, but something to be anticipated. In American culture obsessed with youth, death has been shoved into the closet to be peeked at only when absolutely necessary. We deny our own mortality, hiding our advancing years with surgeries and fad diets and fashion and promiscuity. Effectively, we are completely un-equipped to handle death, whether someone else's or our own. We not only don't wish to think about it, we can't. It's hidden, and we are supposed to deny ourselves even the visible grief which a true loss of any kind merits. We are often expected to be more emotional about a damaged vehicle or a bad meal or a rude person in traffic than we are when dealing with the death of a loved one.Read and learn. Read and re-evaluate the wisdom of such intentional ignorance, and what you might wish to do differently for yourself and for those around you whenever the time comes to shuffle off this mortal coil.

Wow. This is one of those books I bought because the title sounded interesting and it's now taken up permanent space on the bookshelf nearest to my desk. A series of 4 lectures from 1973, there is a VAST amount of information and ideas contained in this tiny book.

I feel that the book is too short. In the noble attempt to give a short overview, the author touches much but leaves us feeling less informed at the conclusion than before we knew about the book's existence. Some of the criticism might be attached to the translation, so I cannot hold the author exclusively responsible.I might be inclined to read the author's larger work on the subject in order to get more in-depth and actually understand what he's trying to say. But I fear that at the end I would be left with the same unanswered questions which would just frustrate me.

Excellent book, rich in history and social facts. Should be a required reading for all interested in knowing more on the topic of dying.

This book is a classic, and it has all the merit to be one. The author did a very thorough study of how death was understood for most of history starting from earlier than the middle ages, and presents customs and points of view that one wouldn't expect of western civilization, human beings or the catholic church. Where, how and why cemeteries were built, how people thought and acted upon deathbeds and the more recent attitude towards death and its relation to hospitals are some beautiful discoveries that the author provides clearly, without pushing any of the issues at all, but definitely convincing(at least me).

Bought for a class. Such a good read though.

A good description of the ideals of death throughout the centuries. It highlights all the beliefs that people held about death.
