Instead of a mature, insightful look at creativity and the value of art--as was my take-away from the book’s glowing description--“Art Matters” struck me as banal, sophomoric, and over-priced. It may be inspirational to a teen that has never been encouraged to pursue his or her creative interests. But it failed to move me. And what’s with “Make Good Art”? That’s pretty trite. Who’s to judge what’s “good”? If one is moved to create, then create with passion and mindfulness! Relish the process and not the results. Art does matter.

There are two reasons why you would buy this book: you’re a big Neil Gaiman fan, or you’re a huge Chris Riddell fan (Riddell illustrated the book).I follow both Gaiman and Riddell on Twitter, Gaiman because he’s an interesting person and says interesting things about writing, and Riddell because he’s such a brilliant artist and sometimes posts videos of his pencil drawing. I got caught up in the release tweets for this book and bought it because I’m passionate about art.The book is a collection of four essays Gaiman wrote between 2011 and 2015, beautifully illustrated by Riddell. Riddell and Gaiman frequently collaborate; they have a very successful working relationship.The first three essays were merely okay; they didn’t tell me anything new. I was disappointed and feared that this quick book, readable in one short sitting, was not worth my time.However, the final essay redeemed the book for me. I won’t reveal everything I liked, because I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone else; but here are three highlights:• “Something that worked for me was imagining that where I wanted to be. . . was a mountain. A distant mountain. My goal. . . And when I truly was not sure what to do, I could stop, and think about whether it was taking me towards or away from the mountain.”• “My first book—a piece of journalism I had done for the money, and which had already bought me an electric typewriter from the advance—should have been a best seller. . . I decided that I would do my best in future not to write books just for the money. . . If I did work I was proud of, and I didn’t get the money, at least I’d have the work.”• “The old rules are crumbling and nobody knows what the new rules are. So make up your own rules.”The book is worth visiting your local library for.

This little book is a wonderful collection of great illustrations and wisdom. I’ll enjoy reading it as soon as I’ve received meaning today. Inspirated I decided to use some watercolors to my favorite pages! Thank you for your art.

I read it in twenty minutes and was left uninspired and disappointed. This is four very short essays spread out into a book. The font used was one of those "handwriting" ones in all caps and hard to read. The pencil sketch illustrations took up the majority of the space on most pages. Not much content.

Yes this book is a very quick read. Everyone is going to have a different metric for what is "worth the money" to them. Personally, I loved this book and will be buying 3 more copies.I have three kids, aged 21, 19, and 16. They are each very creative, with different artistic strengths (writing, visual art, and music, respectively). They all have dreams of doing what they love as a means to support themselves. They will each be getting a copy for Christmas this year.

This is a book that you can read quickly and yet spend a lifetime thinking about. Like most of Gaiman’s work (and I’ve been following him since the Sandman days), the text in here goes much, much deeper than what’s printed on the pages. Combined with Riddell’s sketches this book is a work of art itself, and like all “good art” it is definitely worth experiencing.

This beautiful book, with illustrations, succinctly narrates the author's travails and successes. It encourages any/all would-be artists (writers, specifically, but also intimated for any artistic career) to be true to themselves at all times. It's a wonder to read as it outlines methods for commercial success with personal gratification. Every current and future writer or anyone in any other professional field should read this book. It makes you glad you read it!

Praying this will encourage you, guide you, deepen your relationship with God, and give you structure and peace. It is an excellent tool for those who wish to improve their prayer life but are uncertain how or where to begin. Even those who have been Christians for many years will benefit from the act of praying the scripture.

Praying through Tickle’s prayer manuals has helped give my prayer times a form that I needed a great deal. The format and selection of verses and readings is excellent.

I really looked forward to getting this book. The font however is very small - probably a 6 or 7. Much too small for me to read. Returning it. Unfortunately I didn't even get to read it.

Also i like yhat if you pray on the time frame suggesyed you are praying in spirit with a whole community of believers.

I bought this hoping it would be helpful to me as a tourist, like a Frommers or Fodor's guide. But it's a far cry from those standards. This "city guide" does not even include a single map! It also turns out that it's simply a compilation of material available on the author's website. It's.organized by neighborhood, and without a map, you have no way of knowing where these neighborhoods are. In the author's survey of downtown hotels, the Fairmont, one of the best, isn't even mentioned. There is some good info about some restaurants, but other than that, I found it pretty worthless compared to what's online, or the Pittsburgh section of the AAA Tour Book.

This was very informative and the best up-to-date option for my recent trip. Don't expect glossy images, and there are typos that make it seem a little thrown together in terms of editing process, but for the information on key sights and history this fit the bill.

INSIGHT... may begin to organically ... EMERGE... and may contribute to a careful and well-seat-belted reader's useful and possibly even ultimately coherent .... INTUITION ... about Deep Learning.

This is a classic exemple of a editor-free book. Maybe the ideas are interesting, but the writing is terrible. Only for professionals, who already know a lot about machine learning. As I was writing a book about AI myself I have tried to go through the book, but I gave up after some forty pages.

Fast forward to today and the field of AI has gone a very long way.It's great to find a book such as this which has given me the crash-course to get back into the AI world and help me understand the realities vs. the hype.A definite must read for aspiring AI engineers.

I am about halfway done with reading The Improbable Deep Learning Revolution by Carlos Perez.Where most machine learning books I've started are so extremely and absurdly technical, which provide no practical value to anyone without a Phd in machine learning, this book is excellent.Mr. Perez breaks the topic down into overall goals and trends, with some history, theory, examples, and even practical advice for tech investors.I would recommend this to anyone that wants to learn machine learning, whether they are experts in it or not.

I am astonished as to how insightful this book has been. I recommend this to anyone who needs to keep up to date with the break-neck progress in Artificial Intelligence

This is a great book that houses background information regarding German snipers in WWII. It just does not have much information on Matthäus Hetzenauer. The title leads one to believe this is all about Matthäus but it isn't. The author spends more time quoting other sniper memoirs instead. If you want first hand accounts full of action, purchase the works from Sepp Allerberger or Bruno Sutkus. Pass on this title.

Interesting to see things from the other side. This is the second book I've read from the German side of things. (WD61?) The Germans, much like the Americans who fought in WW2 didn't speak much about their experiences. That shows in this book. I'm glad I got my Father and Uncle to sit down and speak to me about their war time experiences. Almost had to pry it out of them in the late 1990's. I think the Germans that survived the war were much the same. While stationed in Germany in the 1970's there were plenty around. My best friend married a German girl an her father was in an artillery unit. When he realized the war was over his words were "I ran to the Ami!". This is brought out in this book. If the Germans had a choice they tried to avoid capture by the Russians.

I agree with my fellow critics on this. I think 3 stars is a generous rating, actually. The author essentially goes on tangents throughout, spending perhaps 90% of his time discussing things that in some fashion have to do with the supposed subject of the book, like the Tyrol, sniper training, fellow successful snipers, and the 3rd Mountain Division. But the lack of information about the man himself, primarily in the form of but one wartime newspaper interview, is frustrating and disappointing to discover. Ironically the book otherwise seems well written. At the end of the book the author indulges in his last tangent, that being his and the family's friendly involvement with the last Hapsburg Otto, "pretender to the Austro-Hungarian throne", who was evidently very interested in Tyrolean snipers. Tellingly, the author admits that he gave this man a book on German Snipers that was much appreciated, but did not have the time or interest to write a book on a particular sniper! Incredible...

Its OK - just. Matthaus Hetzenhauer only gave one interview in his life about his time as a sniper and it wasn't to the author and it shows. There is so little detail about Hetzenauer and so much padding about what his training might have been like, the nature of the people in the region he came from, the life of a sniper and a lot of excerpts from the sniper training manuals of the day. In short, there is little meat and a lot of potato. The best part of this book is the foreword by Martin Pegler who really does know what he is talking about. Hetzenhauer's life deserves something more than this but given the lack of information of which to base a proper biography this will have to do.

This book shows the reader the life and influences of a sniper in the German Army. Like so many others, he did not get a choice, but was sent to war. Ultimately, Hetzenauer served and excelled in the controversial role of sniper. This is his story.

I waited a long time for this book. Sepp's book was great and very descriptive. Sutkus's book was really good as well but a majority of his was about his time in exile in Russia. This book is brief and full of illustrations. Almost no description of Matthaus's action on the front. I now understand he only really gave one interview and hardly talked about action on the front. There wasn't even much description about his time in captivity. I have been to Austria and seen the area described in the book. Very beautiful but I really didn't need another travel guide description about the mountains and the valleys. As far as German war biographies go, there is much written by tankers, pilots and regular Landsers. There were minimal Heer soldiers that admitted to being a sniper if they survived the war and less that really wanted to talk about it afterwards.

A so so book. It only talks about one sniper and should of concentrated on sniper tactics more. But it did go into great detail

To be clear I would buy the book again. However the title is misleading in that only 30 pages of the book deal directly with his war time career. The rest of the book is fleshed out with general sniper info and sections of period sniper manuals. It is filled with lots of rare and interesting photos. Good info throughout but stars deducted for it not being what it claims.
