This is great for those of us who have problems with or do not like wireless technologies or being chained to computers all the time. I hope that they continue to make maps like this or go back to making them at least for those of us who don't want that technology for whatever reasons.

I need a map book I can mark up for my occupation and Thomas Bros were great. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. I wish it wasnt so.

Unless you have driven the Bay Area for years and know most of the streets and freeways by heart you will need this comprehensive mapbook to get around. Thomas Brothers produces the best street mapbooks for California cities. I am glad that they finally came out with a mapbook that includes all of the major metropolitan areas around the bay. I found it to be handier to use than an having to use several of combined county mapbooks. I also like their new portrait format, which is clearer and shows more area per page and their old landscape format.

This guide is indispensable for pinpointing streets and locations, and finding jammed freeway detours. I began using it the first day. The ring binding makes it easy to use and long lasting. I haven't even used the CD yet, but that further enhances its usefulness. I'm a AAA member and have relied on its individual maps for years; they're still more useful for intermediate distance viewing, but the Thomas Guide is the one I'll be using regularly from now on.

I'm pretty much usually down with a Victorian era novel and I love Sherlock Holmes and this had his niece in it, so I read it and bob's your uncle. If you're looking for a bit of steampunk AU where there's a bit of exploration of women's roles in that era, a bit of romance, even (why not) some time traveling, and a bit of girls kicking buttishness, then this is a fun and innocuous though not very deep novel.There were some pretty strong feminist themes that I liked. Mina and Eveline were capable characters, strong and interesting. But their "depth" of character seemed maybe contrived and a bit forced; instead of being organic and flowing naturally, it seemed like someone said, what would be an unexpected weakness in these characters? Ah! It's that they're not as smart and strong as they thought they were. Except there was never any good reason for Mina to suspect the villain was who she thought it was, and she even said that a few times. And Eveline is just squeamish? I guess? She couldn't get over that?And throughout the novel they were in competition instead of cooperation with each other. I'm sure they will get along better in later books when they're relationship develops, but for a novel with feminist themes it seems like women were pitted against each other a bit much. And there was a lot of romance in the book as well, which I'm not entirely sure was to its benefit. But it made for some nice entertainment!I also am not a huge fan of alternating POV, just a personal preference, so that didn't work as much for me.

This is a fairly entertaining steampunk YA, set in a parallel 1889 London where a wealthy aristocrat who owns extensive steam-engine factories suc-ceeded in getting electricity outlawed in the British Empire when it was just getting started, so technology developed rather differently in the latter part of the 19th century from how it did in our timeline. The two POV characters are Mina Holmes—daughter of Mycroft, niece of Sherlock— and Evaline Stoker, younger sister of Bram. Both are 17. Mina has been a pupil of her uncle Sherlock and exhibits his highly developed powers of observation and deduction, but has not worked to any great extent on her skills at physical combat the way Sherlock had. Her social skills aren’t the greatest, either, since her mother abandoned her when she was young and her father is much to busy with his government work to pay much attention to her. Evaline, on the other hand, is the latest embodiment of a long line of “Venators”—vampire hunters who have super-strength and quickness to let them match the abilities of the Undead. She’s also lovely and popular with young men, though she isn’t really interested in most of them because compared to her they’re wimps. At the beginning of the book both of the girls have been summoned (separately) to the British Museum after hours, where they learn that Irene Adler has undertaken a commission for Crown Princess Alexandra to solve the mystery of several aristocratic young women who have either disappeared or been found murdered. And after she explained this to them and asked for their help, they go out into the body of the museum and find a young man, strangely dressed, standing over the body of yet another young woman, whom Evaline recognizes. Mina quickly notices that the young man’s shoes are dry, although it’s a beastly night out and her own boots are quite muddy. He must have been inside the museum since before the rain started, and couldn’t have brought the girl there. And the story goes on, with Mina attracted both to the stranger and the Inspector from Scotland Yard who comes to investigate the murder, and Evaline to a Cockney called Pix who keeps turning up in the course of their investigation. I got a bit tired of the two girls’ getting all hot and bothered over those men, but otherwise the story was enter-taining and I like both the characters when they aren’t being lovesick along with several other characters who interact with them. There are two more books in the series available now, and a fourth that should be released soon. I’ve bought the Kindle editions of the two that are available, and will probably get the fourth when it’s out.

I loved the colorful and exciting world Colleen Gleason created, and the relationship between the two female leads is just how an unlikely friendship would start in my mind.The pace is steady and the story is told through the points of view of Evaline Stoker (the sister of Bram) and Alvermina Holmes (niece of Sherlock), which gives marvelous insight into their individual personalities and interests. They find themselves in a situation where they are forced to work together, much as they would prefer not to. Although they don't see eye to eye in the beginning, they learn to overcome the issues they have with one another in order to unravel a frightening mystery, one that is killing London's finest young women.There are steampunk references, but no so many that someone who doesn't read the genre should be dissuaded from reading the book. Appropriate for all advanced readers who like mystery, suspense and a hint of romance. I am very much looking forward to checking out the next book in the series!

I love well done steampunk stories, and in this book I was happy with the pictures evoked. Add in girl power with Holmes and Stoker, and I expected great. Unfortunately, there was a bit too much child in the girl and not enough power. I don’t mind mistakes happening as they’re learning and overcoming obstacles, but the girly giggly stuff was just too juvenile. The love interests were a hindrance and not an asset, making the girls appear weak. I had hoped this would be an empowering the girls story instead of a being saved by the boy story. Sad.But what I really didn’t care for was to be left hanging at the end. Holmes had adversaries in Adler and Moriarty, but you knew who they were. You also knew that they’d be showing up again, but even so, each of the Holmes books had a finished feel. Not so with this story. Not only do you not find out (for sure) who the adversary is, the ending just seems to be lying there rather than having a finished feel.I have yet to decide if I’m going to try the second book. On the one hand the second story is not outrageously priced, but on the other hand I don’t want further disappointment. Still, I really liked the world created by the author, and if she can fix the problems this could be a really good series.

I have an aversion to things that make me uncomfortable, and the title alone does that for me.I bought it anyway, and put it on the fast-track of my reading list.It's not what I feared (or I've gotten 'used' to ugly things) and yet it was extremely informative, and in some places the author actually made me laugh or smile, in the context of the moment.Here is a woman that has done everything within her power to make change, to make a difference, and has had to fight to do so. She's had to fight a system that is archaic, a system where prejudice is rampant and openly displayed. She's also had to fight the politics of her business, and then there's the law.God bless her to have the gumption to go to work every day to repeatedly face the ugly. The scenarios that she's faced, the cases that she's fought and won, the lives that she's affected, and the amount of BS that she's had to endure all the while are nothing short of... I couldn't have done it with as much heart as she had.The legal system is broken for these victims, the law IS to blame, but so are many of the other 'pieces' that make up that system - the 'collaborators' as she so aptly labels them. These are the people in and around the system that either discriminate, minimize, or allow these crimes to go unpunished. They include the Judges, the Defense or Prosecutors, and sometimes the investigators.Words take on a whole new meaning here. What you think may be an open and shut case, is anything but. How some criminals use the law to their advantage is criminal in and of itself. There is no justice in a lot of what goes on - it's more about bargaining, lessening the seriousness of the crimes, minimizing the meaning of what really took place as opposed to how counsel would present it to our juries. I'm not letting the jurors off either.It's shameful how 'business' is conducted in our court rooms, made all the more disgusting by these specific crimes and how it's 'dealt' with to mede out 'justice.'This book doesn't provide many answers for me, but instead it poses a lot of questions. For me it was an education on more of what's wrong with our world. I couldn't be more disillusioned with the facts of how this great champion of rape victims was treated, with the amount of stupidity, arrogance, and evil that she had to wade through merely to do what is right - within the confines that the law provides to these victims.Now I understand why I've stayed away from politics all of my years. The system is corrupt beyond my wildest guesses. All in all, Ms. Vachss, my hat is off to you. I want to thank you for having the courage to do 'that' job, in the manner and under the circumstances with which you did for so long. Sometimes the good fight is the best thing you can hope for. Exposing it will be helpful, and naming the collaborators is a good start.I am reminded of some good lawyer jokes, but here is one lawyer that is truly out for justice, who stands for the truth, not just because it's her job, but because it’s who she is.This is an important book - you need to read it for yourself to understand why, and you can pick out your own reasons. Thank you for writing this book, and I hope you continue to expose us to more of your world, because what you do is important and more-so, the right thing to do. But there's also a new list of things that we need to address if there is to be justice for these victims, and it has to start with us, and now we can because of your work and what it has exposed.

Rape is neither sexual nor sexy; it is an ugly act of dominance and control...they use the sex act itself to make their abuse of power more personal.”Vachss spells out this ugly truth through stories of the cases she has prosecuted during her career. Truths that most of us prefer not to even think about. As she explains, “People believe that if something is unthinkable, it can’t be true. I wish they were right. I wish it were fiction.”One case involved “eleven first-degree robberies, twelve first degree rapes, nine first-degree sodomies, seventeen counts of either gun possession or gun use, two first-degree kidnappings, and seven other unlawful-imprisonment counts. In all there were twenty-two indictments…against one defendant…” In another case, the attacker “had a machete. He forced sex on her, several different ways and positions, in different locations. She bled a lot. Then he forced her to go through the house looking for valuables, making her separate the real jewelry from the junk. He made her lie on the bed beside him–an endless stretch of terror–while he watched TV…” Others included child rapists, serial rapists, rapists who spiked drinks and raped while the woman was passed out…Vachss also talks about the politics of prosecuting crimes. About judges who are less than noble. About attorneys who may not be much a better than the rapists. About how guilt is often assigned to the victim. About how a privileged son of a “good family” can often get away with awful crimes.Not that Vachss has only bad and ugly stories to tell. She has a number of successes. Though they may seem trivial in comparison to the evil, they are still worth celebrating. If anything, they seemed to have an unusual amount of difficulty… [performing normally] … All the prostitutes who are in their graves because they laughed at a John’s lack of performance learned the hard way: These were crimes not of excess hormones, but of power, coercion, control.”Rather than sex, rape is about inflicting pain:“People who think rape is about sex confuse the weapon with the motivation…For most rapists the act of deliberately humiliating another human is integral to what they do…they look for that …opportunity to degrade and control–forcing the victim into acts of compliance… Humiliation is their foreplay…a rapist is a single-minded, totally self-absorbed sociopathic beast . . . a beast that cannot be tamed with ‘understanding’… they look for whatever vulnerability might insulate them from capture and punishment. Sometimes that means raping a child, because we seem as a country to doubt the word of children who say they’ve been raped. And sometimes that means trying to sell the rest of us on the concept that it isn’t really rape if the victim is someone we don’t like…The motive for rape is rape.”

I recently read Philip Shaw's 33 1/3 book length essay on Patti Smith's seminal album Horses. Shaw is a Reader in the English Department at the University of Leicester; therefore his analysis is rife with theorists like Lacan, Benjamin, Freud, Jung, and others. But I think the real strength of his book lies in the biographical sketches he provides about her early life and development as an artist. Shaw does an admirable job with explaining how Smith got tot eh point where she could record an album like Horses and provided insight into the background and lyrics of the songs. For example I was unaware that "Redondo Beach" was code for a gay beach in the LA area. It was interesting to hear her past with people like Sam Shepard and the whole downtown scene. I find many of Smith's songs timeless-and the ones from this album include "Land," "Gloria," and "Redondo Beach."

the 33 1/3 series is great for album-oriented music-obsessives (is there any other kind? I guess so, these days)!This is a good one to start with. Love reading about the early-70s NYC scene.

Horses is one of the 100 or so albums that actually deserves a book written about it. Everything about it, from the innovative blend of poetry and garage rock, to the iconic cover art, has become interwoven into the fabric of rock and influenced countless bands. What Phillip Shaw’s 150-page mini-book on Horses accomplishes is that it dissects the influences, both musically and lyrically, which helped Patti Smith and her band shape the songs on Horses. Shaw dives deep to show how Smith drew on events from her life or other people’s songs and use them as a springboard for her own creations (like on “Kimberly” and “Gloria”). Where the book falters is that it lacks insider perspective, with none of the people involved in making the record contributing first-hand insights (there are some quotes reprinted from other sources). Without that crucial piece of info, this stands strictly as a fan essay, which is intriguing for other fans, but can hardly be called the final word on the album. There isn’t much here that couldn’t have been learned from the multiple Patti Smith biographies in print, Please Kill Me, From Velvets To Voidoids or the liner notes from the expanded edition of Horses.

Patti Smith's masterpiece *Horses* is probably more deserving than most rock and roll records of serious academic study, especially given that Smith steeped herself in both high culture and rock history before making it. The best parts of the book are its artistic biography of Smith prior to its release.On the other hand, the book relies heavily on the "theory" of Jacques Lacan, Julia Kristeva, and other late twentieth century noncemongers, whose melange of Marx and Freud persuaded the academic Left to waste its days in unintelligible, irrelevant indolence for a time. This hurts.Shaw, for example, makes note of the androgyny of Mapplethorpe's dramatic cover photograph. He's not the first to notice. He relates it quite properly to the dandyism cultivated by French symbolist poets such as Rimbaud and Baudelaire, artists that rank high in Smith's constellation of high culture influences. He goes on to describe the photograph as a statement that the "phallus is no more privileged than any other signifier", which does not appear to be meaningful, much less insightful. I'm not sure it contributes to understanding, even if kicking the privileged phallus is always fun. And he misses entirely the opportunity to compare Mapplethorpe's stark androgyny with the somewhat more baroque androgyny of male artists like David Bowie or Marc Bolan, which would appear to be immediately relevant in the context of Smith's Max's Kansas City days.The high themes of sexuality and mortality run through the record. A Freudian take on the record is certainly a valid approach given these themes. Shaw's text is quite helpful when it doesn't go adrift in the lotus land of deconstruction. When it does, you can skip ahead a bit without missing anything.

I'm disposed towards warm feelings for any fellow fan of Patti's, and have enjoyed a couple of other 33 1/3 titles, so I report with reluctance that I found this tome full of adequate hot air to heat a mansion through the most protracted of winters.We've all heard the sardonic quote (variously attributed to Frank Zappa, Elvis Costello or others) that "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture," and here's your proof. The author is a prof of 19th-century literature and critical theory at the University of Leicester and for the first 100 pages of the book he invokes a pantheon of psychoanalysts--Freud, Lacan, and Jung--gender theorists, cultural critics, and anthropologists in an attempt to deconstruct Patti's development as an artist. One supposes the justification for this high-handedness is Smith's love of Rimbaud and other literary figures and her proclivity for mixing high-culture aesthetics with punk rock, but the theorizing here is clearly overboard. For example, you remember "the big clock tower" Patti sings about in "Gloria: In Excelsis Deo"? Evidently it isn't simply a clock tower but a metaphor for "phallic authority" that relieves the "indeterminacy of the singer's gendered identity and sexual orientation." Who knew?My advice is to pick up Patti's National Book Award-winning autobio, "Just Kids," for the lifestory and to settle for your own personal impressions while enjoying Smith's groundbreaking debut recording.

As some readers will know the 33 1/3 books vary wildly in quality and relevance. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, and considering that this record is one that I have listened to death I thought the author did a great job of setting the stage (Smith's background), and analyzing the songs. After reading I listened to the LP one more time with even greater appreciation. If you're put off by an academic approach than maybe this book isn't for you, but otherwise have at it.

Adrian and Cameron really know their stuff! Using Free PR as our PR bible, they have helped take our small business PR strategy to the next level. In a clear and concise way, they show us the step-by-step process of compiling a media list, pitching our story and how to find and work with journalists. I used to think it was difficult to do PR and get our company mentioned in major media publications, but by following the steps laid out in this book, it really is a no brainer. I can't recommend this book enough for companies looking for exposure without hiring an expensive PR agency.

With the plethora of marketing books available, this quick, insightful book was a nice departure. I know I really didn't think of using free PR as part of my marketing strategy, but after reading this book, I get the "why" and most importantly the "how" to get it done. The book has full of examples and steps on how to get free exposure for your product or service. And as a bonus, it wasn't an onerous read, it was quick, to the point, and full of "value bombs!"

I'm an old-school business professional with decades of experience navigating through the PR world for my clients. I've hired and fired some many PR firms because everyone claims "leverage & relationships". Today that's BS. I love how this book dissects the inner workings of PR and really... who needs to pay for a publicist these days with some much at our fingertips. This book spells it out and simplifies it for the business owner.Bravo! A good resource for those in pursuit of beating the system.

In a world of paid media these strategies stand out. Since reading the book I have gotten on one podcast and one speaking event. Highly recommend

Another stunning book from Cameron. I used these PR strategies to land a feature on over 120 US TV stations, and even a cover shoot for Entrepreneur Magazine (we got cut on the editor floor), but still we got that a full article inside. PR works. This book will show you how; very practical (no fluff). Was a great read.

Take what you thought you knew and throw it out the damn window! Cameron is the real deal no BS guy when it comes to growing business. This is a surprisingly simple strategy for growth and as an old journalist it is exactly what I would have ran with!
