For those of you with daughters looking for books with strong, memorable female characters, Gooney Bird Greene is a must read series. We borrowed this book from the library initially, and enjoyed it so much we bought a copy for my daughter's 3rd grade class, along with 8 dictionaries for the third graders to use. Not only is it an enjoyable story for the first- to third-grade age range, it also motivates them to learn how to use a dictionary. I agree with one of the other reviewers that the story is not quite as strong as the first book, but it is still an enjoyable read.Additionally, it has a surprise ending that got me choked up, and when I checked to see how my daughter's teacher liked it, she had also been surprised and choked up by the ending.Lastly, it wasn't until we picked up some other books by Lois Lowry that we discovered she has won a couple Newbery awards for other books she has written.

I bought this book for my 7 year old daughter to read and she finished all but the last chapter in one sitting! It is sometimes very difficult to find a series that she enjoys enough to read of her own accord, and this one has definitely been her favourite so far.This is her 3rd Gooney Bird book, and she will get her fourth one in her Christmas stocking, which I know she will be thrilled to receive. We first discovered Lois Lowry's funny and engaging books about a quirky and very likeable 2nd grade little girl, unusually named Gooney Bird, when I bought one on a Kindle daily deal, and now I wish the author had written more!When I asked my daughter if she used the Kindle dictionary to look up any words that she didn't know, she told me that she didn't need to, because all of the hard words' definitions were explained to Gooney Bird's class as part of the story! Hopefully the book will have the added benefit of increasing her vocabulary!

Not as great as Gooney Bird Greene, Gooney Bird the Absurd or Gooney Bird the Fabulous. Those others had great wit, lessons on writing stories, fables, and poetry. This one had a weak plot, and some unsavory remarks about stinky socks, unlike in the other books where the children were always supportive of one another.

My Grandson wanted Chapter Books and this is what chose.

Just the book I needed.

gooney bird and the room mother was the best book i have ever read in my whole life. my favorite part was when the room mother said happy thanksgiving. (This was read and written by my seven year old granddaughter who reads on my Kindle often.)

I teach first grade and read Gooney Bird books aloud to my class. We love the books. We all know these are works of fiction and that classrooms in real life don't work like Gooney Bird's. We are drawn to Gooney Bird's big heart and confidence.

What a great book! Lots of real-life stories of how the author and others handled change. Dozens of ideas and techniques to help get through life's challenges and curve balls. How to view changes in a new light even to the point of embracing change, because all change brings growth.

I just got this book and started reading it. I read every other day until I got uncomfortable. Things started changing right away but I was able to go-with-the-flow and not freak out like I usually do. It's an awesome book written by someone who is the same religion as I am, ECKANKAR. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone.

This is a well written book chock full of guidance for coping with expected and unexpected changes in your life. The author really writes from her heart yet offers practical, sound advice with useful exercises. She implores the reader to take the higher soulful view when experiencing big changes which I found helpful and calming. Not a religious book but she does implement this soulful approach to work with changes in life as opposed to resisting changes, esp uninvited ones.I liked the chapters on establishing realistic 'big' goals by paring them down to smaller goals ie., working your way down the ladder as opposed to looking up the ladder which can make them seem elusive. Working your down allows for growth and flexibility, you can change your mind! Have always marvelled at those who were good at goal setting but didn't grasp the actual mechanics behind it. Maybe being too rigid on wanting a specific outcome I would then view as a failure if it didn't happen exactly as intended. She emphasizes letting go of wanting a specific outcome or desire and to remain open to what does transpire as the variation could be a better fit; this is a difficult but worthwhile proposition to master.This is a terrific book. The final chapters explore the possibilities of past lives and although that is too far fetched for me, I'm open to whatever works for a person and would not discount the sound advice dispensed in this book.

Do wish that things could always remain the same? Have you found that they don't? Are you afraid that you lack the strength and ability to cope with on-going change in your life? Ms. Moore offers the concept that changes are gifts from a loving God, and invites us to consider the benefits, the inherent blessings contained in these gifts. She shares her own personal experiences in surviving cancer, and bankruptcy, just to mention a few. She also includes refreshing, insightful exercises to help one surpass the "helpless victim consciousness", and re-gain mastery over any situation. The book is further enhanced by true experiences of many of Ms. Moore's friends. Each recognized their need to change, for personal and spiritual growth. I especially liked the "Daily Problem Solver" passage, and the "Asking God a Question" exercise on pages 117-118. They are among the many tips presented in this remarkable book to help anyone handle life's difficult moments.

Recent changes in my life have made me feel confused and lostabout myself and my life. I am still quite young and in the prime ofmy life for change and personal growth. I really was looking for a book that wasn't "out there" but was more down to earth and could help me deal with my feelings of confusion and help me set a path to my life. I am taking my days one at a time now and looking for the positive in every experience thanks to this book. I am a pretty conservative person and this book has helped me to open my mind and my heart. I highly recommend it to anyone experiencing any confusion about life or anyone who feels they need some guidance. This book is guaranteed to make you feel much more in control of your own destiny and feelings.

We used this book, How to Master Change in Your Life for our writers group and found the results more than satisfying. Each member of our group experienced tremendous growth in both our spiritual focus and personal lives. I enjoyed this book. But I know a lot of Mexican history. I thought the book was an excellent refresher, but someone with no knowledge of the subject will likely be overwhelmed — maybe too strong a word — by the names, the events, and the information. On the plus side, readers of this book may have their interests piqued and look into the subject deeper.

This short volume is well constructed. It's particularly strong in the background and tumultuous early years of the Mexican Revolution.

Excellent. Very clear & well organized. The Mexican Revolution was hugely complex, with great variances of time and region. Sutherland does an outstanding job of giving us curious non-specialists a way of understanding it all. A fine book!

A very good concise chronicle of the events from1910 to the 60's puts in perspective the complexity of the Revolution and its aftermath.

Like so many good, intelligent books on Mexico, this one struggles to find an audience. I just don't think it would be very much help to someone trying to understand what happened in Mexico between 1910 and 1930. A beginner would like some sort of chronology, of which there is none. A map of Mexico would be helpful, and there is one of little use. There are sophisticated and trenchant observations on the historiography of the Revolution that would amuse an experienced historian, and, for someone who has a general idea of the cast of characters and events, a very helpful and all too brief attempt to look at the big picture in a sort of "and so?" discussion. But mostly, this is a book for cognoscenti, and it would not be a wise idea to toss it at a group of undergrads and expect them to make something of it. Professor Knight knows too much, which is both impressive and unhelpful.

I am currently watching a documentary on the Galápagos Islands and bought this little guide to see what it is like.At the back is a stylised map with the different islands and where you are likely to see what wild life-- I liked the map and its information.The guide is a number of illustrations per page of mainly Reptiles and Birds. The illustrations are in colour and reasonable.You are told the name of the creature and its length or height.One pointer for identification may be given.The birds are males ,usually in breeding plumageSome will like this little work, others not.I personally liked it ( I wouldn't use it as my only guide to the Galápagos Wildlife )For me it filled a need for quick identification.I think it is worth the money

When I was in the Galapagos I used this every day. When I came home and made a photo album I referred to it constantly for my commentary on which bird or animal was which. It's so convenient because it's so compact and lightweight. It holds up well because it's laminated. For a serious birder, it might not be quite adequate. I'm not in that category so it was perfect for me. I just wanted the basics and there was nothing I couldn't find.

A pretty comprehensive, fold-out guide to the most common wildlife in the Galapagos. It's water-resistant, which is good for those who will be snorkeling or diving. One whole side is devoted to birds, which is great considering the numbers and diversity of species among the islands. For most travelers, this is probably sufficient if you're with a good naturalist guide.

Nice pics of the main animals I hope to see myself very soon. 6-page (front and back) fold-out pamphlet. Simplistic map on the back that shows Darwin's 1835 route and color-coded dots to show where the main animals can be found. .

This brochure was very useful while we were visiting the Galapagos Islands. It is light-weight and coated so it didn't get damaged by ocean spray. I used it to supplement my guide book, which I left in the cabin while out on the Zodiac and the islands.

This laminated, folded reference for the species you are likely to encounter in a trip to the Galapagos Islands is excellent. The pictures are very realistic, plus it includes the Latin names so that you can cross-reference the animal to a detailed guidebook or reference later. There are even short notes, such as "The similar Santa Fe land iguana is found only on Santa Fe Island" (if you are lucky enough to get to Santa Fe Island!).As our recent trip to the Galapagos included snorkeling (and yours might too), I greatly appreciated the page on Nearshore Fishes.

This is an excellent guide that I wished I had known about and purchased before visiting the Galapagos. Highly recommended to take when going to the enchanting and fascinating Galapagos Islands!

This is great for those of us who have problems with or do not like wireless technologies or being chained to computers all the time. I hope that they continue to make maps like this or go back to making them at least for those of us who don't want that technology for whatever reasons.

I need a map book I can mark up for my occupation and Thomas Bros were great. Unfortunately, they are no longer in business. I wish it wasnt so.

Unless you have driven the Bay Area for years and know most of the streets and freeways by heart you will need this comprehensive mapbook to get around. Thomas Brothers produces the best street mapbooks for California cities. I am glad that they finally came out with a mapbook that includes all of the major metropolitan areas around the bay. I found it to be handier to use than an having to use several of combined county mapbooks. I also like their new portrait format, which is clearer and shows more area per page and their old landscape format.

This guide is indispensable for pinpointing streets and locations, and finding jammed freeway detours. I began using it the first day. The ring binding makes it easy to use and long lasting. I haven't even used the CD yet, but that further enhances its usefulness. I'm a AAA member and have relied on its individual maps for years; they're still more useful for intermediate distance viewing, but the Thomas Guide is the one I'll be using regularly from now on.

I'm pretty much usually down with a Victorian era novel and I love Sherlock Holmes and this had his niece in it, so I read it and bob's your uncle. If you're looking for a bit of steampunk AU where there's a bit of exploration of women's roles in that era, a bit of romance, even (why not) some time traveling, and a bit of girls kicking buttishness, then this is a fun and innocuous though not very deep novel.There were some pretty strong feminist themes that I liked. Mina and Eveline were capable characters, strong and interesting. But their "depth" of character seemed maybe contrived and a bit forced; instead of being organic and flowing naturally, it seemed like someone said, what would be an unexpected weakness in these characters? Ah! It's that they're not as smart and strong as they thought they were. Except there was never any good reason for Mina to suspect the villain was who she thought it was, and she even said that a few times. And Eveline is just squeamish? I guess? She couldn't get over that?And throughout the novel they were in competition instead of cooperation with each other. I'm sure they will get along better in later books when they're relationship develops, but for a novel with feminist themes it seems like women were pitted against each other a bit much. And there was a lot of romance in the book as well, which I'm not entirely sure was to its benefit. But it made for some nice entertainment!I also am not a huge fan of alternating POV, just a personal preference, so that didn't work as much for me.

This is a fairly entertaining steampunk YA, set in a parallel 1889 London where a wealthy aristocrat who owns extensive steam-engine factories suc-ceeded in getting electricity outlawed in the British Empire when it was just getting started, so technology developed rather differently in the latter part of the 19th century from how it did in our timeline. The two POV characters are Mina Holmes—daughter of Mycroft, niece of Sherlock— and Evaline Stoker, younger sister of Bram. Both are 17. Mina has been a pupil of her uncle Sherlock and exhibits his highly developed powers of observation and deduction, but has not worked to any great extent on her skills at physical combat the way Sherlock had. Her social skills aren’t the greatest, either, since her mother abandoned her when she was young and her father is much to busy with his government work to pay much attention to her. Evaline, on the other hand, is the latest embodiment of a long line of “Venators”—vampire hunters who have super-strength and quickness to let them match the abilities of the Undead. She’s also lovely and popular with young men, though she isn’t really interested in most of them because compared to her they’re wimps. At the beginning of the book both of the girls have been summoned (separately) to the British Museum after hours, where they learn that Irene Adler has undertaken a commission for Crown Princess Alexandra to solve the mystery of several aristocratic young women who have either disappeared or been found murdered. And after she explained this to them and asked for their help, they go out into the body of the museum and find a young man, strangely dressed, standing over the body of yet another young woman, whom Evaline recognizes. Mina quickly notices that the young man’s shoes are dry, although it’s a beastly night out and her own boots are quite muddy. He must have been inside the museum since before the rain started, and couldn’t have brought the girl there. And the story goes on, with Mina attracted both to the stranger and the Inspector from Scotland Yard who comes to investigate the murder, and Evaline to a Cockney called Pix who keeps turning up in the course of their investigation. I got a bit tired of the two girls’ getting all hot and bothered over those men, but otherwise the story was enter-taining and I like both the characters when they aren’t being lovesick along with several other characters who interact with them. There are two more books in the series available now, and a fourth that should be released soon. I’ve bought the Kindle editions of the two that are available, and will probably get the fourth when it’s out.

I loved the colorful and exciting world Colleen Gleason created, and the relationship between the two female leads is just how an unlikely friendship would start in my mind.The pace is steady and the story is told through the points of view of Evaline Stoker (the sister of Bram) and Alvermina Holmes (niece of Sherlock), which gives marvelous insight into their individual personalities and interests. They find themselves in a situation where they are forced to work together, much as they would prefer not to. Although they don't see eye to eye in the beginning, they learn to overcome the issues they have with one another in order to unravel a frightening mystery, one that is killing London's finest young women.There are steampunk references, but no so many that someone who doesn't read the genre should be dissuaded from reading the book. Appropriate for all advanced readers who like mystery, suspense and a hint of romance. I am very much looking forward to checking out the next book in the series!

I love well done steampunk stories, and in this book I was happy with the pictures evoked. Add in girl power with Holmes and Stoker, and I expected great. Unfortunately, there was a bit too much child in the girl and not enough power. I don’t mind mistakes happening as they’re learning and overcoming obstacles, but the girly giggly stuff was just too juvenile. The love interests were a hindrance and not an asset, making the girls appear weak. I had hoped this would be an empowering the girls story instead of a being saved by the boy story. Sad.But what I really didn’t care for was to be left hanging at the end. Holmes had adversaries in Adler and Moriarty, but you knew who they were. You also knew that they’d be showing up again, but even so, each of the Holmes books had a finished feel. Not so with this story. Not only do you not find out (for sure) who the adversary is, the ending just seems to be lying there rather than having a finished feel.I have yet to decide if I’m going to try the second book. On the one hand the second story is not outrageously priced, but on the other hand I don’t want further disappointment. Still, I really liked the world created by the author, and if she can fix the problems this could be a really good series.
