There are several good reviews of this book, but I want to add my delight in buying it.1. Every flower on the cover, and all flowers inside the book, have complete project instructions: photograph of complete flower, line pattern, exact thread color, and stitching instructions.2. The stitches which make up the flowers are simple and demonstrated in large clear line drawings. Even though there are only a few stitches Trish Burr combines them to make densely textured embroidery.3. Each completed flower is about 5 or 6 inches. The flowers can be used singly or in combination. I embroidered a single magnolia in the corner of a throw pillow for my youngest daughter's college room, an A for amaryllis on the corner of a baby blanket for my only grandbaby, and I'm getting brave and I'm going to make a wreath of them on a comforter for my own bed.4. Probably not so important in the area of needlework, but still important to me, these patterns have a neat history. Each project is headed with the plate number and the Redoute book from which is was taken. I loved browsing through the Redoute botanicals which I would never have looked for in the library had not Trish Burr taken paintings from the book and turned them into patterns clear enough even for me to follow.Needless to say, I would recommend this book of patterns to anyone whether experienced or just beginning in embroidery.

Although you can't "Look Inside" this book at Amazon (currently, anyhow), the cover is exactly representative of the projects inside. This is no encyclopedia of a billion stitches, but a book focused tightly upon reproducing Redoute's beautiful botanical prints in "thread painting."There were several things about this book that stood out for me:Not the Kitchen Sink--------------------Trish Burr wisely restricts herself to a relatively few stitches: long-and-short, satin, stem, split, bullion knot, French knot, and perhaps a couple more. They are presented clearly, in diagrams and words (and photos in some cases), and followed by a small sampler. Then come the Redoute projects...Clear Presentation------------------Each flower (there are 17) is presented in the same format:- First, a large-scale photograph of the stitched piece, along with a list of needles and other materials.- Then, three line drawings: one for the pattern outlines, one to define which areas are padded or detailed, and one to show color placement.- Another, smaller photograph on the same page spread as the diagrams- A verbal explanation gives details on stitching each part of the flower: which stitches, in what order, how many strands.Ms. Burr writes in her Introduction that she aims for clear illustrations and good explanations, and she has achieved her target admirably. Although the format as I've described it may sound repetitive, I found it refreshing not to have to flip back and forth between pages, searching for color keys or stitch info--and equally refreshing not to have all the directions crammed into one cryptic diagram. (Anyone who has ever struggled to decode the projects in "A to Z of Ribbon Embroidery", for instance, knows what I mean. Sumptuous photos of the projects, but figuring out how to reproduce them is murder.)Unusual Selection of Subjects-----------------------------It's easy to find embroidery books on English flowers, and many of them are truly gorgeous (Helen Stevens' Masterclass series comes to mind), but if you're looking for something different, something... well, something French!, this may be just the thing for you. Instead of pinks and cornflowers and foxgloves, here are lilies and iris and camellias and magnolias. Roses, morning-glories, and a few exotics like amaryllis, bird-of-paradise, and poppy are also represented. Again, the cover illustration gives a good idea of what you'll find inside. It ain't no cottage garden!Achievable----------All projects are stitched using easily available DMC embroidery floss. None of the stitches are jazzy or difficult. The instructions are so clear that even a relative novice should be able to achieve exciting results. (Again, Helen Stevens comes to mind, but alas, as a counterexample. I love looking at her books, but they have never given me the slightest bit of confidence that I could do work like that.)=============All in all, an excellent book, well worth the money. Bravo, Ms. Burr!

This book presents lovely designs with detailed instructions.

I love working on these great projects. Trish Burr is really the best, most wonderful artist and teacher. This was the first of her books that I boughtMy only regret is that her books were so full of repetitive fundamentals rather than new themed material. I feel so used, wanting the new material so badly that I put up with such major padding.

A lovely lovely book. I am a fan of Vietnamese Embroidery and I appreciate Trish Burrs handling of embroidery techniques, Redoute's Flowers and embroidery instructions. It is a book that inspires and I am very glad I purchased this book. I am in awe of here embroidery.

My husband and I are planning a vacation so Italy so I wanted a large wall map to help plot our trip. I like the map detail and it does work for our purposes but I do wish it were larger with even greater details in the regions.

The map is fabulous, but the tube it came in was retaped up like it had been returned and the map itself was crinkled on one edge where someone tried to put it back in the tube. Otherwise, it is a nice map.

The map arrived in perfect condition inside a clear plastic tube. It is very colorful and very detailed.

My wife and I love Italy, so I bought this map to put on the wall. Like all National Geographic maps this one is clear, concise, and large enough to see major cities and larger towns in Italy. The map comes rolled in a tube and I mounted it on a piece of foam core so we could put it on the wall of our kitchen.

OK map for small classroom. Our classroom did not have an Italian map so I got this. Works ok but you have to be close to it, obviously. A bigger map would have been a lot better. Also - for an Italian class, it might be better to get one with the regions identified. I plan to bring it home at the end of the semester and hang it up. It should be more than adequate for that use.

This poster was exactly as described. So looking forward to using it to map out our trip.

If you are a street photographer (and love black and white) this is a book that you MUST get for your library. The print quality is phenomenal (Steidl) and the narrative, flow, and sequencing of the book really takes you on an amazing journey.If I could only have 10 photobooks (while stranded on a desert island) this would be one of them.What I love most about this book is that it isn't just a collection of "best hits". Trent Parke isn't interested in just making strong single images-- he is interested in storytelling, narrative, and a flow of images. Through the book, you can really get a sense of the post-apocolytical nature of Australia (seen through his eyes) and follow him along this adventure.It is fascinating to know that he actually developed most of the film for this book while he was traveling, and also in the middle of this book-- his wife (Narelle) gave birth to their son.As for the images, they are dark, suspenseful, full of emotion-- and ask more questions (than offer answers). First, this book is insanely good. The energy that comes through this work by Trent Parke is intense, eerie, unconventional, dark, hopeful, beautiful, and bewildering. This is a book that tells an apocalyptic story saturated with powerful symbols. It has some of the best single images my beginner's eye has ever seen, but thankfully the sequencing and overall work is so strong I can't resist flipping through the whole book each time I sit down with it. Very happy it was reprinted this year. I wouldn't deliberate long about whether or not to buy it!I am sad to see so many 1 start reviews due to poor shipping/order fulfillments. I understand the frustration, but those who have given 1 star reviews for this reason should understand that it does not affect Amazon or any distributer who is to blame, only the artist. I think it's misleading that this book has only a 3 star rating (as of writing this review) - almost completely because many were burned by a distributer.

Stunning book, and superb printing! It's a shame that the negative reviews due to production delays and shipping issues are tallied in the overall ratings here on Amazon. From the standpoint of rating the book alone, it is five stars all the way! I'm really happy to have a copy, given that it sold so quickly. Absolutely superb book, and a stunning body of work!

One of the most creative street photographer I know, except he has an edge, which you can't find it in other street photography books. He is absolutely unique, different, and an old soul inside a young body. I will buy any books he has. There is no wonder Magnum chose him, but I think he is even beyond Magnum. If you like film photography, you will NOT be disappointed in this book, I guaranty.

This is an astounding photo book. Parke is some sort of "wizard of lights" but not just that; in this journey captured throughout Australian land he proves to be a classic photojournalist as well. This is an absolute jewel in the history of contemporary photography.

For those of us who can't afford to purchase a copy of "Dream Street", this is the next best thing.

I am an American who has lived and worked in Brazil since '74...not continuously but, spiritually and intellectually, have never really left and have family living there. I recommend this book if you want a refresher course on Brazil but not if you merely want to familiarize yourself with the country. It was written by an economic journalist who for years was The ECONOMIST's reporter in Brazil and, in my humble view, was intended for serious students of the country, business people and the academic classroom. It reads, needless to say, much like a lengthy column about Brazil written from the perspective of a newspaper person stationed in the country and, as a result, is stuffed with facts and data....and with possibly a bit of factual overkill in some sections, but I found few if any errors or flaws in Mr. Reid's research, information, observations and prose style. While the author is more than aware of the perverse corruption that infects most facets of Brazilian life, especially at all levels of government (and admittedly it truly is hard to get a credible, statistical handle on it even after years of residence and day-to-day life in the country), it is the one area of Mr. Reid's effort where his in-depth analysis breaks down. The author is not to blame - corruption is just too perversely hidden to detect and comment on in objective terms. Read this book if you are serious about Brazil, its past, present and future. By the way, Mr. Reid, is it just my imagination but you and Lula do share an odd resemblance judging from your photo on the inside rear cover flap!

Michael Reid gives his readers a much-needed overview of the history, economy, society, and politics of Brazil since 1500. Too often, the country seems to live in the shadows of the other BRICS, i.e. Russia, India, China, and South Africa. To his credit, Mr. Reid examines with much objectivity the repeated disappointments that Brazil has had to endure both domestically and abroad. In summary, the book under review will hopefully give its readers a better appreciation for a country which is called to play an increasingly important role in the 21st century.

That is an excellent book. If you are interested in knowing about Brazil and why there are so many protests going on, that is the book to buy. Unfortunately, it took a major event like the World Cup to inspire someone to write a book in English about a poor country that dreams one day to be rich. The so called país do futuro.The author understood that the reality Brazil is facing has its roots in history and culture. But it is the people who are ultimately responsible for how things are in general, not prepared to sacrifice alegria for modernization, at least not yet.Growing up during the "Brazilian Miracle" of the 70's, I thought the country would be a super power in next twenty years or so. That did not happen, even with the military having total political control, there was not enough reforms done in time to deal with the oil crisis. I saw the same euphoric reaction during the Lula presidency as a repeat of those years, and once again, the excitement gave way to disillusion.Living in the US for so many years, I now understand and agree with what the author mentioned will take to achieve that better future waited for so long.I recommend it.

Part of me is a policy wonk but a bigger part just wants to know how things, including countries, work. I read this book on a trip to Brazil in March of 2016, when two of the main characters, Lula and Dilma, were under fire. The book really helped me understand the complexity--and the potential--of this country. It is slightly dated only because things there change rapidly. But this book provides the underlying framework to permit the reader to make sense of these later events. I highly recommend it if you want to learn about Brazil and are limited to only one book. I did, by the way, try it on Audible and found it too difficult to follow.

Although there have been many news stories about the recent economic development of Brazil, "Brazil: the Troubled Rise of a Global Power" is one of the few books that provides a historical context and an analysis of the current country.Historical events discussed in Part I are carefully focused to help the reader understand their importance to modern Brazil. These include Brazil's unique transition from a colony to an independent nation, the traditional power of landowners such as coffee planters, the effects of Getulio Vargas' incorporation of many Fascist labor laws, and finally the transition from the military dictatorship to democracy.Part II is the most interesting section for readers interested in current Brazil. Reid discusses the administrations of three post-military-dictatorship presidents: Cardoso, Lula, and Dilma. He points out how each has helped change Brazil into a nation with a expanding economy with a growing middle class. His discussions of the current middle class and of the developing agriculture and petroleum industries are especially interesting. And of course, his information about the development of the Amazon Rain Forest is of international interest.Michael Reid spent several years as an Economist of London reporter in Brazil and published this book as the country prepared to host the World Cup Soccer tournament. He knows his subject. He is objective, but he writes from his British perspective supporting democratic development. It is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Brazil, its current development, and the changing world economic situation as BRICS nations take a larger role.

Really enjoyed this book - an insightful look at Brazil from an economic, political and sociological lens. Drew an excellent map of how and why modern Brazil exists and acts as it does. If you have any interest in learning such things, read this book!

This book is really well written! I've been waiting for this book to be released and started reading it as soon as I got it. If you're a Chloe Fan, Dance Mom fan or just want a great read I'd suggest this book. Awesome job Chloe! You've done an amazing job on your first book. I can tell this will be the first of many more books to come !

Chloe Lukasiak is inspiring! Even at her young age of 15 (when she wrote this book), she reminds us that hard work and determination can take you far in life and on the dance floor. The book is written in a very engaging manner that will appeal to tweens, teens and adults. In this book Chloe gives sound advice on how to handle bullying by kids and adults, finding support and inspiration to achieve your dreams and never giving up. I enjoyed the many personal and behind the scenes of Dance Mom's photos, her poetry and her writing style filled with humor. I plan on purchasing more copies for others in my family. I hope Chloe Lukasiak continues writing. For a young lady of now 16, her life experiences give her wisdom well beyond her years.

These days, it is so refreshing to read an intelligent, well-written book from someone like Chloe, a little girl who grew up on TV and is known all over the world yet balances her celebrity life with an everyday life grounded in good values and thoughtfulness. Even with a ghostwriter, Chloe's voice and warm excitement shine through. While there are parts about the fun, fashion, travel, and red carpet events, it's more like she's invited you home to meet the family. I loved reading about her time filming Dance Moms, especially the heart-warming stories about the other girls. Beautifully designed and illustrated, containing super-rare photos, and absolutely overflowing with love and gratitude toward her family, friends and fans, this book shows her joy in life and appreciation for the opportunities she has to make a difference in the world.

This young lady really has overcome some interesting challenges, unique to the industry she's in, along with being surrounded by awesome people who've kept her completely grounded.She's done a great job on capturing Chloe'isms, which only she can do, and sharing snippets into her life.Grab a copy for yourself and for all of the young ladies in your life. Totally worth it.

I received the book today, and couldn’t put it down! It’s absolutely uplifting, filled with tidbits of life stories, photos, doodles, and lots of “Chloe” advice. It’s a book I plan to reorder for other family members!.

This book reflects what we as fans already knew. That Chloe is a talented mature kind young woman who is well beyond her years. She is so humble and grateful and brimming with love for all those who have been less fortunate in this world , it’s amazing. The book is a fast read and a wondersful uplifting piece of writing for young people who struggle with being comfortable in their own skin.

I have followed this young lady since she started Dance Moms. I was very upset when she was forced to leave before the show ended. As it turned out it was the best thing that happened to her because she has grown into a very intelligent and beautiful young lady. Most of all she is a great role model for all young people. They say people are born with an older soul, meaning they are wise beyond their years. I totally think Chloe is one of those people. Her ideas and ways of dealing with life are very much older than any of her age. I am most inspired by her ability to overcome her shyness to become a very outspoken person for good things. I really would have to write a book to say all the things I respect about Chole but for now, I would suggest buying this book for your kids and grandkids and hope and pray they turn out like her. Credit is given to Mark and Christi Lukasiak for being such great parents and supporting her all the way. I will be very interested to see the path Chloe takes in life.

My girl is an avid reader and she did not enjoy this. She won’t finish it.
