I would give this 3.5 stars if I could, because it's not quite 4 but better than 3. Some of the exercises and communication styles seem a little awkward and "overly polite" for true intimacy, but maybe that's why I need these skills in the first place? I'm a little less feminine than the average woman.

This book is incredibly eye opening. I've read so many relationship and communication books, yet this is my go to and is so perfectly written and put together. I've finally learned what I've been searching for

This is THE workbook for people who may even know how to communicate, just not with each other. Perfect for all walks of life, and it will absolutely change your relationship!My fiance and I would not be engaged, if it weren't for this book. We were happy, but just couldn't communicate well with each other. This book highlighted some key things we were and weren't doing.

Recommended for use by our marriage counselor and we try to use the word tracks to each other and do exercises together. Definitely brought us closer, especially feeling silly reading the examples. Totally recommend to others!

Should be required reading for all High School kids. It's that good

If you really need to work on communication this is a good book, but feel like a lot of the advice is self explanatory. But I did like the parts about using the correct words to describe a need or want. Just changing verbage has been helpful and feels less defensive

As a x2 Iraq vet, I was always troubled and interested in the modern history of the middle east. If you want a really gut wrenching account of how the west completely screwed up an entire region, look no further. The incompetence of civic leaders, their blatant arrogance and greed, their backdoor dealings and re-dealings, the political swings, the sheer luck of some incidents, and the silliness of so-called "intellectuals", comes to the fore in this great book. If you have dreams of quality international politics or agreements, this book will shatter them. Many of the accounts could easily have been written today and be believable.The book is well divided into chapters, but requires careful reading to keep up with the people, places, and politics. A quick bio of key players right at the outset would have been quite beneficial.Only giving it four stars because it really needs some full-page maps, particularly for the campaigns and showing national boundaries in the 1918s. Finding a quality map of the late Ottoman empire and modern middle east is essential if you're going to follow the campaigns, as the map is unfortunately devoid of any maps. GoogleEarth was a great help, and you can also get an idea for the key terrain (Hejaz for example)

As I read this wonderful book, I conjured a fantasy of a White House meeting held a couple of months before the Bush Administration’s fateful 2002 decision to invade Iraq. In attendance were the usual suspects: Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, Condi Rice, Colin Powell, Dick Rumsfeld, et al. But some sage attendee had also suggested the inclusion of Professor Fromkin who was asked to reflect on the notion of such an adventure in light of his study of the history of the Middle East. The professor went on for a couple of hours describing the events leading up to, and then following, the allied victory in World War One: the British change of heart about the essential integrity of the Ottoman Empire; the second and third thoughts about the Balfour Declaration; the ex parte division by the allies of the human and territorial spoils of war; the resultant festering resentment of foreign domination; the brutal machinations of the occupiers (especially the French in Algeria and elsewhere); the interwoven, ever-lasting, invariably brutal sectarian violence between Sunni and Shia…the list went on and on. The government officials sat in rapt fascination at the professor’s tale. They thanked him for his visit, and upon his departure, took just moments to conclude that any such invasion would be a historically tragic mistake.Of course, such a conclave was never convened. Despite many attendees’ knowledge of the same history Professor would have recounted, the invasion decision was taken and its predictable (if someone were listening and thinking) consequences dog us and the rest of the world to this day.We history buffs are especially enamored of Santayana’s observation that, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” But I guess governments don’t read history books, no less invite an authority on a particular region or period in for a coffee and a chat before a momentous and irreversible decision is made. More’s the pity. The upshot is this: if you believe your knowledge of the Middle East is not quite what it should be and you wonder from time to time why certain events happen and others do not in this perpetually troubled part of the world, just read this book. Then you will know what our Iraq invasion decision makers didn’t...or chose to forget.

Want to share my opinion, hoping to save potential readers some time. My goal with this book, as a casual reader of history, was to try and understand how the modern Middle East came to be, and how the west was complicit in carving it up. This is not the book. It is exceedingly dry, rote facts chapter after chapter, and not at all involving. I did suffer through it, but it took a long time...a few dreary pages at a time. It would be more useful if used as a reference book, specifically for events leading up to and immediately after WWI. Also, note that the book leaves you at around 1922, with little to no explanation as to what occurred after. There must be a better and less painful book to educate yourself on this subject in general. I relied on the NYTs endorsements, which in retrospect were pretty misleading. Hope this review helps someone.

I also was a shake n bake infantry squad leader with E Co. 1/7th Cav. Div. (Airmobile) in 1972. This book was a great way to show what we went through when we got to Vietnam. The Army needed instant leadership for this war. I knew exactly what the author went through in NCOC school at FT. Benning Ga. It was a great read for any grunt from the Vietnam war.

I enjoyed this account of A company 1st battalion 8th Infantry of the 4th Infantry Division. It was good to hear it from a shake and bake perspective. I have read a couple dozen biographies from the Vietnam War, mainly Army but some Marine also. This is a good one. Horton tells us about the every day grunt, the man in the foxhole or bunker, the man on patrol and that is what I am looking for. I have only two complaints: the first is that story is disjointed and the second is the lack of maps or drawing embedded in the stories. I like to visualize how everything is playing out and it is really hard without aid. As for being disjointed I prefer to read what happened to each group of men in a continuous story rather than parts of the story as it happens throughout the day and night. By the time you get around to finishing your story about the tracers I have trouble remembering where they are and what they have been through.

I served in Vietnam in the same company, A-1-8, as SGT Horton albeit several months later. However, I was fortunate not to have experienced combat as severe as that which Horton describes here. His combat accounts are vivid and well worth the read.Nevertheless, there are about 200 pages to get through before that combat. Then roughly 150 pages are dedicated to the single battle which is the crux of the book. This is followed by another 100 pages of addendum on the March 1969 campaign. The middle section is engrossing.If you read this book to discover what is was like to be an infantryman in Vietnam, you will be rewarded. If, however, you expect a history of the Army's shake 'n' bake sergeants you will be disappointed; this is strictly one man's story. As noted by others, the book is in dire need of a competent editor.This book is much like the war it describes, lackluster until the fighting begins. None of that should diminish the sheen of SGT Horton's two Silver Stars nor the obvious depth of research that he put into producing this book. I'm sure that it was a labor of love. And every account of the history of the Vietnam experience is important.

Very informative accounts of actions while serving in the Republic of Vietnam. Horton tells of his life before, during, and after his actions in combat while serving as Sergeant 1968 to 1969. This is a very detailed account of all he experienced and all he witnessed while in county. One of the better reads of service in Vietnam!

Since the end of the Vietnam War, a plethora of books has been written by veterans trying to make sense out of the quagmire that American found itself in during the 1960s and early 1960s. Each one of these personal accounts of the war offers unique insights and at times for the veterans writing them, they are cathartic in many ways for these veterans: old ghosts are finally laid the rest and emotional scars healed.What makes Jerry Horton's memoir of the war, The Shake 'n Bake Sergeant, memorable and poignant is that he describes how he became a part of the Army's program to fast-track personnel to become squad leaders to replace personnel wounded or killed. Horton has to overcome all sorts of obstacles, not the least of which is earning the respect of his men who must be led by a sergeant who has no combat experience.This is a powerful book of war and the camaraderie between "grunts" who watch out for each other. Although the expression, "I couldn't put this book down" might be overused by reviewers, it is most definitely apropos here. There's this slow, suspenseful build to Horton's memoirs as you follow him and his men into the bush where danger is all around. And when the fighting starts, you are right there in the middle of it, feeling the danger and hoping that Horton and his men survive.Thank you, Mr. Horton, for telling your story and the story of your men.Jeffrey Miller,The Panama Affair
