Peter E. Davies has published 27 books concentrating on modern combat aircraft and the Vietnam War. He has written 17 previous Osprey titles and co-authored two others. Four of these have concentrated on the US Navy's use of the F-4 Phantom II. All of Peter's books on this topic have contained extensive input from interviews with more than 100 former U.S. Navy Phantom II aircrew, maintainers, and mission planners. He lives in the UK.Jim Laurier is a native of New England, growing up in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. He has been drawing since he could hold a pencil and throughout his life he has worked in many mediums creating artwork on a variety of subjects. He has worked on the Osprey Aviation list since 2000 and in that time he has produced some of the finest artwork seen in these volumes. He has specialized in aircraft of the Vietnam War period.

As the U.S. began to disengage from the war in South Vietnam, the conflict remained dangerous for the U.S. Navy carriers on station off shore. This was especially true for U.S. Navy strike aviation, which picked up additional missions from U.S. Air Force units departing theater. Author Peter Davies has focused this Osprey Combat Aircraft Series book on the role played by U.S. Navy F-4 Phantom II units in the last years of the Vietnam War.The end of Operation Rolling Thunder left the Navy F-4 crews with some airspace restrictions but plenty of reasons to fly. The U.S. Navy was also reviewing its air-to-air performance in Vietnam, instituting corrective measures such as the famed "Top Gun" school. The results, described in considerable detail, were better performances in combat. Those performances came in an increasing lethal airspace over North Vietnam, populated by modern Soviet and Chinese surface-to-air missiles and fighters.The author takes a chronological approach, detailing the results of numerous missions, especially during the Linebacker I and II Operations. The narrative including lots of air-to-air combat. Aces LT Randy Cunningham and backseater, LTjg Willie Discoll, get their fair share of attention, but so do lots of other "MiG-killers". The narrative is nicely supported with period photographs and color plates of F-4 aircraft configurations. Well recommended to students of the air war over Southeast Asia.
My husband flew the Navy F-4 II during three Vietnam tours, and continued to fly for most of his 30 year career. He loves this book - he recognizes many of the names mentioned; and his fleet squadrons, VF-142 and VF-161, are both featured.
The F4 Phantom 2 is by far my favorite fighter plane of all time. Excellent color photos and illustrations bring the aircraft to life like never before.
Love info on the type of planes I worked on a long time ago.
