Not only was Libby the first female winner of the Iditarod, but she succeeded as a good story writer. One feels she takes you along with her through this challenging and grueling journey. She is one tough gal, but her compassion toward her dog team shows. Even though she is tired and faces many obstacles, she still takes the time to rest her dogs, feed them, and tend to them to be sure they are not being driven beyond their capabilities. I strongly recommend this book as many of us are not aware of this tough, gritty breed of individuals not afraid to get out there and do what seems unimaginable.
I found with book a wonderful and easy read. I am an Iditarod fan and finished this book just as the 2019 Iditarod Dog Sled Race from Anchorage to Nome Alaska began. The book really got me geared up for the race. For anyone wanting to learn more about this wonderful sport of the northwest, this is a book to get your hands on. The experiences that Libby Riddle had back when she was the first woman winning of the race were the same weather wise and the racers this year had. An FYI third and fourth place winners were WOMEN. Way to go. Read the book. Check out the 2020 Iditarod beginning the first Saturday in March.
Libby was an inspiration to women all over the world when she won the "last great race" in 1985. This book is told through her eyes, as she goes down the Iditarod trail. I read it preparing to go see the Iditarod start. It helped me understand the mindset of these amazing (slightly nutty) mushers.I enjoyed the description of each leg of the race. It almost makes you want to find your own team and hit the trail. I also liked the information she shares about Iditarod rules (warming food, foot care, equipment) and the people at the checkpoints. I had heard mushers are the "rock stars" of Alaska, and from all the support they get on the trail, they may be.One thing that I've heard about Libby from other sources is that she took exceptional care of her dogs. All mushers do, but she went above and beyond, and the book goes into detail. You really get to see what super stars these little guys are, and I felt how proud she was when they crossed the finish.If you liked this one, read Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod. It's more humorous, but also gives great insight to the race.
Ms. Riddles book, with the added date in the clever lay-out of the pages, is a wonderful read.I came out of it feeling like I'd not only gotten a rich experience of her life-risking and record making Race across Alaska,but a much deeper appreciation and understanding of what every Iditarod racer has taken on.A wonderful read.
This absorbing first narrative person covers the whole two and a half trying weeks of Ms. Riddles' amazing win of the Iditarod., "The Last Great Race," in 1985 as the first woman musher to do so. You will laugh, cry, sweat and gnaw your nails as the story unfolds. At least I gained a whole new perspective on this grueling trek and what it takes to complete it, never mind win! I can only say well done on both the feat and the story about it.
Libby Riddle gave a good talk on her Iditarod experiences when we were on an Alaska cruise in 2012. I bought a book and she signed it for me. Another lady we know had an interest in the race, and in dogs. We bought a copy and gave it to that lady as a present and she also loved the book.
I’d love to review this book, but can’t. I purchased this book for my husband about a woman who ran the Iditarod.... the sticker on the back of th book has the right title, but the book that it’s attached to is certainly not about a sled dog race!!! 😳 Funny surprise, but the book is going back.
I loved reading Libby's account of her Iditarod race. I'm an Iditarod fan and this was an exciting book to read.
